Job Description

The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Division of State-Operated Specialty Care, Bureau of Cherokee Mental Health Institute (CMHI) is seeking a Nurse Supervisorto join our team! This is a full-time position with a Monday – Friday, 10:30 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. schedule with rotating on-call responsibilities.

This position is eligible for a $5,000 retention payment for every 6 months of commitment. Speak to the hiring manager for more eligibility information. Current state employees are not eligible for recruitment payments upon transfer, demotion, or promotion to another agency.

The Nurse Supervisor provides leadership and management to registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, resident treatment technicians, and resident treatment workers. This position ensures that patient care is carried out in compliance with established policies, procedures, and standards, and helps provide a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors. The Nurse Supervisor manages staffing for a 24/7 facility and ensures staffing minimums are met at all times. The Nurse Supervisor develops, coordinates, and conducts various trainings and new employee orientation, initiates and participates in quality improvement, and serves on permanent and ad hoc committees as assigned. In addition to these and other responsibilities, this position handles the full range of personnel actions including coaching, counseling, evaluating, discipling, and approving leave. The Nurse Supervisor assists with grievances and administrative investigations, completes performance evaluations, assists with policy development and revision, assesses and supports the educational needs of staff, and ensures the competency of new employees.

CMHI provides active inpatient treatment to adults in need of acute psychiatric care. The facility offers several services includingindividualized treatment plans. Support for patients with special education needs to continue their education is provided, and individuals are encouraged to collaborate with staff members in formulating their own plan. Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

  • All of the following (a, b, and c): a. Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Iowa by the Iowa Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact Administrator’s Agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing; and b. Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in nursing; and c. One year of full-time professional clinical work experience in a correctional environment or in any combination of nursing specialty areas including epidemiology, geriatrics, maternal and child health, nursing education, pediatrics, public health, mental health or psychiatrics, or intellectual disability.
  • All of the following (a and b): a. Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Iowa by the Iowa Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact Administrator’s Agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing; and b. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in nursing.
  • All of the following (a, b, and c): a. Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Iowa by the Iowa Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact Administrator’s Agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing; and b. One year of full-time professional clinical work experience in a correctional environment or in any combination of nursing specialty areas including epidemiology, geriatrics, maternal and child health, nursing education, pediatrics, public health, mental health or psychiatrics, or intellectual disability; and c. A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in part b), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in nursing equals one year of full-time experience.
