You'll play a critical, hands-on role in maintaining and repairing state facilities that serve Iowans every day-working independently, solving complex mechanical issues, and coordinating work across multiple building systems.
What You'll Do
As a journey-level maintenance professional, you will:
- Perform skilled mechanical maintenance and repair work across multiple trades, including mechanical, plumbing, pneumatic, and low-voltage electronic systems (24V and below).
- Independently diagnose and troubleshoot complex building system issues,
- recommending effective, long-term solutions.
- Conduct preventive maintenance and system inspections for HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical equipment to ensure reliability and safety.
- Interpret and work from blueprints, schematics, sketches, and specifications to complete installations and repairs accurately.
- Safely operate and maintain a full range of hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment.
- Coordinate directly with vendors, contractors, and service providers, including scheduling, oversight, and communication.
- Manage and document work orders, repairs, parts usage, and maintenance activities. Ensure all work complies with fire codes, safety standards, and applicable building regulations.
- Serve as a knowledgeable, professional point of contact for building occupants regarding maintenance needs and timelines.

What We're Looking For
This role is best suited for someone who brings:
- Journey-level knowledge and hands-on experience in building and mechanical trades.
- Working experience with plumbing, HVAC, ventilation, boilers, and refrigeration systems.
- Familiarity with computerized building control systems and maintenance management software.
- The ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities across facilities. Strong communication skills and a professional, service-oriented approach.
- Basic proficiency with email, Microsoft Office, and facility management applications.
- Ability to pass a criminal background check.
- Valid Iowa Driver's License (or ability to obtain and maintain).
- Ability to safely operate forklifts, scissor lifts, manlifts, and similar equipment. Willingness to participate in on-call rotations, weekends, and after-hours work as needed.

- Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes one year of full-time work as a Maintenance Repairer.
