The Iowa Department of Transportation’s Construction and Materials Bureau is seeking a detail-oriented and highly organized Engineering Office Assistant 2 to provide essential technical and administrative support to the bureau and the State Central Materials Laboratory.
This position reports directly to the Bureau Director and plays a key role in supporting a variety of operational functions.

The Iowa Department of Transportation’s Construction and Materials Bureau is seeking a detail-oriented and highly organized Engineering Office Assistant 2 to provide essential technical and administrative support to the bureau and the State Central Materials Laboratory.
This position reports directly to the Bureau Director and plays a key role in supporting a variety of operational functions.
Key Responsibilities Include
- Storm Water Program Administration Assist the Earthwork Field Engineer with the Storm Water Program for projects in the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP). Issue public notices, maintain official files for permitted projects, and prepare correspondence for Notices of Intent (NOI), Notices of Discontinuation (NOD), and permit renewals. Upload documentation to Doc Express for field staff and project records.
- Project Reporting Prepare and distribute a weekly Project Status Report (PSR) for all active construction projects in the STIP, including carryover projects from previous seasons.
- Contract Oversight Support Assist the Bureau Director with oversight of annual outside-services contracts.
- Travel Coordination Serve as the bureau’s travel coordinator, responsible for developing and administering the annual travel plan.
- Procurement Prepare purchase orders for office and laboratory supplies, materials, equipment, furniture, and computer accessories.
- Hiring Process Support Assist the Bureau Director and three additional hiring managers with interview scheduling and hiring logistics.
- Event Planning Plan, coordinate, and manage all logistics for DOT conferences and workshops hosted by the bureau.

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
- All of the following (a and b):
- Graduation from high school, GED, or equivalency; and
- A total of five years of full-time experience in highway design, maintenance, construction, or materials; or administrative support in inventory management, training programs, administrative recordkeeping or closely related areas.
- A total of five years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university coursework in any field equals one year of full-time experience.
- Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes eighteen months of full-time work as an Engineering Office Assistant 1 or three years of full-time work experience in highway design, maintenance, construction, or materials.
