Job Description

The Iowa Department of Health & Human Services, Division of Public Health, Bureau of Health Statistics, is seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented, team player to join our team as a Death Registration Program Coordinator!

In this role, you will primarily focus on supporting Iowa’s vital records system by providing statewide administrative oversight of the death registration program. The Death Registration Program Coordinator, under the direction of the Issuance and Registration Section Supervisor, will collaborate with funeral directors, medical examiners, physicians, and other external partners to ensure the accurate and timely registration of death records in the Iowa Vital Events System (IVES).

About The Role

We’re looking for candidates who are collaborative and have top-tier verbal communication skills and the ability to comprehend and digest technical and complex written material, including state and federal regulations.

In This Role, You Will

  • Lead and enforce death registration regulations while supporting medical examiners, physicians, funeral directors, and other stakeholders involved in electronic death registration.
  • Coordinate the development, implementation, and enforcement of policies and procedures related to the Iowa Vital Events System (IVES), ensuring compliance with Iowa Code and maintaining high data quality standards.
  • Develop and implement processes to monitor and improve timeliness and accuracy in death registration.
  • Provide training and ongoing support to more than 12,000 stakeholders statewide.
  • Review and resolve escalated death registration quality assurance issues. Make independent decisions using established laws, rules, and procedures, and collaborate with clerical staff and supervisors on issues requiring higher-level intervention.
  • Coordinate sole source agreements and contracts with the Iowa Donor Network to support the Anatomical Gift Transplantation Fund and Iowa Donor Registry.
  • Work closely with the IVES development team to address system functionality issues, implement resolutions, and communicate updates or program changes to stakeholders.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

  • Seven years of full-time work experience in the administration or operation/execution (i.e., providing consultation and/or technical assistance to stakeholders, research and analysis, or enforcement of program guidelines/policies/procedures) of a program (i.e., the provision of a service or an administrative oversight/enforcement responsibility).
  • All of the following (a, b, and c):
  • One year of full-time work experience in the administration or operation/execution (i.e., providing consultation and/or technical assistance to stakeholders, research and analysis, or enforcement of program guidelines/policies/procedures) of a program (i.e., the provision of a service or an administrative oversight/enforcement responsibility); and
  • A total of four years of education and full-time experience (as described in part a), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in any field equals one year of full-time experience; and
  • A total of two years of graduate-level education and full-time experience (as described in part a), where twenty-four semester hours of accredited graduate college or university course work in any field equals one year of full-time experience.
  • Graduation from an accredited school of law.
  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes nine months of full-time work as a Program Planner 2 or twenty-seven months of full-time work as a Program Planner 1.
