Summary:

The Mission of the Idaho Department of Correction is to create a model correctional system that provides equitable access to programming and opportunities that reflect a community experience, foster connections, and restore victims of crime. To work with selected inmates and coordinate with the current correctional case manager to help prepare them for release, coordinate with Division of Probation and Parole staff after the release of the inmate, provide continuity of support for the inmate and perform related work.

Responsibilities:

  • Works with selected inmate participants by reviewing current file information for candidates that met program criteria including scheduled release date within 60 days of release, location, and status of parole plan.
  • Monitors class completion within the institutions in areas such as personal development, interpersonal skills, substance abuse, relapse prevention, employability, and parole standards and expectations; coordinates instructors to facilitate training.
  • Assists management in setting goals and objectives of the program and explains them to staff and instructors as well as the inmates; continues to work with selected inmates 60 days after being released into community including probation and parole officers, District staff, and engaging community support such as social services and assistance, education, treatment, employment, mentors, and development of housing plans.
  • Writes procedures and field memorandums to establish program guidelines and compliance.
  • Obtains identification documents for released inmates; conducts risk assessments; schedules polygraphs when appropriate, assists other instructors in development of classes; tracks and reports inmates' progress and outcome of training through management of case plans and ensures program guidelines and Department of Correction policies are followed.

Detailed responsibilities:

  • Good knowledge of rehabilitation and treatment programs for residents, which include social counseling techniques related to substance abuse, education, parole, interpersonal skills, or employment. This is typically gained by completion of an Associate's degree or higher in the Human Services field such as criminal justice, criminology, law and justice, prison administration, social work, sociology or psychology AND at least one year of work experience counseling clients related to substance abuse, education, parole, interpersonal skills or employment OR two years of full-time work experience counseling clients related to substance abuse, education, parole, interpersonal skills or employment.
  • Good knowledge of anti-social personality traits associated with residents. This is typically gained by completion of an Associate's degree or higher degree in criminal justice, sociology, psychology, social work, or a related field; OR at least one year of full-time work experience supervising or managing a social service caseload for offenders within the community or correctional facility.
  • Some knowledge of training methods. This is typically gained by successful completion of at least one college level course (3 credits) or workshops classes of at least 16 hours (2 days) covering communication concepts, learning styles, course design, and presentation skills, (e.g. Instructor development, train-the-trainer or equivalent) OR experience co-presenting or leading formal training sessions to small groups (such as at staff or other small groups of people (POST, refresher training, etc.).
  • Experience gathering data, preparing statistical reports, and making recommendations, including performing data input and retrieval on a computer. Typically gained from at least one year of experience gathering data, preparing statistical reports, making recommendations, performing data input and retrieval on a computer.
  • Good knowledge of networking with the community. Typically gained by at least four college-level courses (12 credits) in a human services field such as criminal justice, criminology, law and justice, prison administration, social work, sociology or psychology OR at least one year of full-time work that included networking with community to coordinate resources as a primary function of the job OR completion of at least 300 practicum/internship hours in a social service setting that included brokering service on behalf of clients.
