The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), Northern Region Design and Engineering Services, is looking for an Engineer/Architect 1 to help us Keep Alaska Moving!

What you will be doing:

You’ll be part of the Northern Region's Contract team, a talented, supportive engineering group that takes pride in creating safe and reliable transportation solutions for Alaskans. You’ll play a key role in projects that keep communities connected, strengthen Alaska’s economy, and enhance public safety. As a lead reviewer, you’ll help uphold engineering excellence across the state. With the Northern Region Contracts team, your expertise matters, and your impact can be seen across the entire region.


  • Conduct professional peer reviews of plans, specifications, and contract documents to ensure alignment with engineering standards.
  • Ensure compliance with State and Federal regulations, including FHWA and FAA requirements, through detailed document review.
  • Manage contracts by creating and reviewing PS&E packages and preparing bidding documents with a focus on accuracy and quality control.
  • Collaborate with Maintenance & Operations, design, construction, and planning teams to support seamless project coordination and success.
  • Provide technical, legal, and logistical support for aviation and highway projects throughout the full contract lifecycle.
  • Innovate contracting approaches by exploring new formats and processing contracting waivers to improve project outcomes.
  • Lead regional compliance efforts with multiple agencies and assist the Chief of Contracts as needed to maintain project integrity.

The working environment you can expect:

This position is located in Fairbanks at the DOT&PF complex on Peger Road, where design, construction, maintenance, and support staff are all within proximity. The role involves frequent coordination with project teams, consultants, contractors, municipalities, and state and federal agencies. Daily contacts include engineers and technical specialists across DOT&PF to resolve design issues, ensure compliance with standards, and support project delivery.


Who we are looking for:

To be successful in this position, the selected applicant will possess the following core competencies:

  • Civil Engineering: Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods required to plan, design, construct, operate, and maintain facilities such as buildings, transportation systems, water and sanitary systems, and other public works systems.
  • Reading Comprehension: Understands and interprets written material, including technical material, rules, regulations, instructions, reports, charts, graphs, or tables; applies what is learned from written material to specific situations.
  • Technical Competence: Uses knowledge that is acquired through formal training or extensive on-the-job experience to perform one's job; works with, understands, and evaluates technical information related to the job; advises others on technical issues.
  • Written Communication: Writes in a clear, concise, organized and convincing manner for the intended audience. 
Special Note:
License as a Professional Engineer is required.

Minimum Qualifications

Registration as a professional engineer (PE) or professional architect, and two years of professional engineering or architectural experience as an Engineer 1, Architectural Assistant 3 or higher with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere.

Special Note:
Persons not registered in the State of Alaska must be registered in a state recognized by the State Board of Registration for Architects, Engineers and Land Surveyors eligible for comity in accordance with AS 08.48.191(b). Persons employed under this provision must become registered in Alaska within one year of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.
