With the support of staff based in Nome, AK, this position serves as the field crew leader for the Kwiniuk River salmon ennumeration tower near Elim, AK. The Kwiniuk River tower began in 1965 and provides valuable data for the management of commercial and subsistence fisheries in northern Norton Sound. The primary duties of this position are to record hourly salmon passage by species, capture salmon using beach seines and outboard skiffs to collect biological data, and to maintain field facilities and equipment in a remote setting.

This is an exciting position for an applicant looking for an opportunity to work and live in a beautiful, remote setting in northwest Alaska. If you enjoy finding creative solutions to the dynamic challenges of operating biological field stations, this is the position for you!

The working environment you can expect:
The Kwiniuk River is a pristine salmon spawning stream located in the northern Norton Sound near the community of Elim. Project operations take place in a remote field camp on the bank of the Kwiniuk River where staff live in wall tents and cabins and traveling to Elim is periodically required for gas and groceries. Requires operation of skiffs and ATVs to travel to project site where incumbant will live for up to 3 months. May require travel in small aircraft, fixed wing or rotary. Also requires training for the safe handling and operation of firearms in bear country.

Who we are looking for:

Experience operating and maintaining skiffs, ATVs and field gear and equipment is desirable. Skills in capturing, handling, and sampling live salmon are also a plus. This position will be the main field leader in a camp with two other fisheries technicians, so experience overseeing employee operations is also a benefit.
