What you will be doing:
This position involves assisting with the control and eradication of invasive fish populations, restoring native fish populations, conducting a variety of fisheries and environmental sampling, collecting and recording data, and assisting with maintenance and logistical needs for various projects. The incumbent will be required to work both with a team and independently in both remote and near-town locations. At times the work will be physically difficult but always rewarding to those who appreciate the protection and preservation of wild fish populations.

The working environment you can expect:
Daily job locations could vary and may include working at the Soldotna Fish and Game office or shop, the Fish and Game Kasilof Maintenance Facility or in the field working directly from a boat or wading in a rocky and slippery stream in either an urban, rural or remote setting. Working from a semi-remote field camp will be required at some point from August-October. Daily duties performed will vary but may include equipment preparation and maintenance, construction, supply purchasing, travel by highway vehicle, powered or non-powered watercraft, ATV, aircraft or foot, data entry, wading streams, collecting fish with a variety of gear types including operation and netting from a boat, purchasing and organizing supplies and operating a variety of hand tools, power tools and electronic devices. Work may include frequent lifting of > 50 lbs. It is vital that the person in this position interact well with coworkers and the public and professionally represents the Department. The work season is 6 months, May 1 - October 31. Will require some backcountry work for trips extending up to two weeks and will need flexibility in work scheduling. May be required to safely handle and operate firearms or bear spray.

We are interested in candidates who possess some or all of the following position specific competencies:
- Ability and willingness to interact professionally and tactfully with the public and work safely, positively, and cohesively with coworkers.
- Capable of physically strenuous field work (carrying loads > 50 lbs) in hazardous field environments such as wading in slippery streams, working and living in remote areas, and being exposed to biting insects and inclement weather.
- Experience operating and deploying field equipment, weirs, and fish capture nets and traps.
- Experience with the identification of pacific salmon and resident species.
- Experience with non-motorized and small outboard-powered boats in remote settings.
Special Note:
- This position may be in possession of, or have access to, firearms/ammunition.
- Valid driver's license.
- First aid/CPR certification. Training will be provided by the department at no cost to the employee.
Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation or the equivalent.
OR
Three months as an entry level fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska, this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 1.
OR
Six months of work experience involving fish, wildlife, outdoor manual labor, or in a laboratory.
Special Requirements:
Exposure to animals, insects, inclement weather, low level flying, travel by boat or skiff, or contact with drugs and chemicals may occur. Housing may consist of bunkhouses, vessels, or wall tents. Some duties may be restricted for employees under the age of 18 in accordance with State and federal child labor laws. Positions are seasonal or temporary.
Special Note:
"High school diploma equivalent" means one of the following: 1) a GED (general educational development); 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.
An individual who will complete the educational requirements and obtain the required high school diploma or equivalent within three months may apply and be considered for a vacancy. Such applicants may be given a conditional job offer but may not be appointed until receipt of the required degree has been documented.
