What are the responsibilities and job description for the Community Hablitation Self Hire position at Starbridge?
Are you someone who enjoys helping others build independence, connect with their community, and live a full, meaningful life? We’re looking for a compassionate and reliable individual to provide Community Habilitation support for a person with developmental disabilities.
Working under the general direction of the Individual and their Circle of Support, the Self-Hire Habilitation Counselor will assist with daily activities focused on community engagement, building social skills, and developing independent living skills such as cooking.
What you’ll do:
- Provide 1:1 support to two children (ages 9 and 7) in home and community settings
- Support participation in community activities such as parks, playgrounds, outings, and small trips to stores
- Assist with social engagement and building appropriate behaviors in community settings
- Help with daily living skills and increasing comfort in public environments
- Provide hands-on support during activities (e.g., assisting on playground equipment, supervising outings)
- Support personal care needs, including assistance with pull-ups and ongoing potty training
- Monitor safety at all times, including close observation for seizures (for one child)
- Engage children in structured, fun, and meaningful activities such as music, dancing, and play
Details:
- Up to 20 hours per weekend (Saturday and/or Sunday)
- Schedule: Weekends
- Pay: $17–19/hour (working with one child at a time)

About the Individuals:
- 9-year-old: Non-verbal (uses a few words), energetic, loving, enjoys music, dancing, and playgrounds; may become overwhelmed in large or crowded environments and benefit from emotional support
- 7-year-old: Non-verbal, expressive, enjoys relaxing and watching videos; requires additional physical support during activities and close monitoring due to epilepsy (seizures may be silent)
Supervision:
- Supervised by the family and Circle of Support
Qualifications:
- Must be 18 years or older
- Reliable and dependable
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
- Comfortable working in both home and community settings
- Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities preferred
- DSP or caregiving experience preferred
- CPR/First Aid certification preferred
Additional Requirements:
- Ability to remain attentive and responsive in a dynamic environment
- Strong communication and patience when supporting children with varying needs
