Wastewater Surveillance Epidemiologist
Location: Augusta, ME (Hybrid) 60% Remote
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Position Summary:
The Wastewater Surveillance Epidemiologist plays a key role in supporting our client's Infectious Disease Epidemiology Team by coordinating statewide wastewater surveillance activities and analyzing public health data to inform response efforts.
This role combines data analysis, epidemiologic surveillance, stakeholder collaboration, and program coordination to strengthen Maine’s ability to monitor and respond to infectious diseases.
Key Responsibilities:
Wastewater Surveillance & Data Analysis
- Monitor, clean, analyze, and interpret wastewater surveillance data
- Prepare standardized reports and communicate findings to stakeholders
- Support data-driven decision-making for infectious disease response
Program Coordination & Collaboration
- Serve as the primary epidemiology resource for wastewater surveillance in Maine
- Collaborate with subject matter experts across disease areas (e.g., COVID-19, influenza, healthcare-associated infections)
- Participate in federal and regional wastewater surveillance workgroups
- Lead coordination with internal and external partners to implement surveillance initiatives
Program Development & Oversight
- Pilot and refine statewide wastewater response protocols
- Manage and track grant-related objectives and deliverables
- Support program planning, evaluation, and continuous improvement efforts
- Conduct outreach, education, and stakeholder engagement activities
- Serve as a key point of contact for wastewater surveillance efforts
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Information Systems, or a related field (e.g., Biology, Biostatistics, Computer Science, Community Health)
- At least 4 years of relevant experience in epidemiology, data analysis, or public health programs
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word)
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
- Willingness and ability to travel as needed
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Public Health or related field with 2 years of relevant experience
- Multilingual communication skills
Technical Knowledge
- Epidemiology principles and public health surveillance methods
- Statistical analysis and data management techniques
- Coding/programming languages (e.g., SAS, R, Python, SQL)
- Data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, ArcGIS)
- Health data systems and standards (e.g., HL7, FHIR, ELR, eCR)
- Surveillance platforms (e.g., NEDSS, ESSENCE, Immunization Information Systems)
- Infectious disease transmission and prevention
