Quality Assurance Chemist – Maine CDC (Hybrid)
Work Model: Hybrid (Up to 3 days remote / 2 days onsite)
Schedule: Full-Time, 40 hours/week, Monday–Friday
Location: Augusta, ME
Position Summary
The Quality Assurance Chemist will support the Maine CDC and the Department of Agriculture, Conservation, and Forestry (DACF) PFAS Response Program by providing specialized technical assistance in environmental analytical chemistry. This position reviews laboratory data, evaluates PFAS analytical methods, and assists with interlaboratory studies for agricultural commodities and livestock tissues. The role also includes hands‑on PFAS analysis using state-of-the-art instrumentation, with additional responsibilities supporting the Maine Health and Environmental Testing Laboratory when needed.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical chemistry support to Maine CDC toxicologists and DACF PFAS Response Program staff.
- Perform formal evaluations of PFAS analytical laboratory reports and methods.
- Assist with design, execution, and interpretation of interlaboratory PFAS testing studies (e.g., milk, bovine serum, muscle tissue, eggs).
- Conduct PFAS analyses on agricultural commodities and livestock tissues using LC‑MS/MS and related instrumentation.
- Review and assess Quality Control (QC) data; accept or reject analytical results.
- Evaluate sample integrity, queue testing, and participate in daily laboratory operations.
- Review quality assurance (QA) and analytical datasets; prepare detailed technical reports.
- Maintain laboratory information system (LIMS) data and ensure compliance with accreditation standards (AIHA, EPA, CLIA, State of Maine).
- Maintain and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation.
- Follow safety protocols and quality system procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related laboratory science.
- 2 years of professional experience in analytical chemistry.
- Experience with mass spectrometry platforms such as LC‑MS/MS, HPLC‑MS, or GC‑MS.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in a related scientific discipline.
- Experience in environmental or biological sample analysis (soil, water, crops, serum, tissues).
- Familiarity with solid‑phase extraction and PFAS sample preparation.
- Experience conducting QA/QC for analytical data.
- Understanding of AIHA, EPA, CLIA, or other laboratory accreditation standards.
- Ability to follow detailed analytical procedures and troubleshoot technical issues.
- Strong statistical and data analysis skills.
- Experience drafting SOPs and technical reports.
- Excellent attention to detail, organization, and multitasking abilities.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and scientific databases.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
Schedule
- 40 hours per week, Monday–Friday (typically between 8:00 AM–5:00 PM).
- Hybrid work: Up to 3 remote days/week, with 2 onsite days at Maine CDC offices in Augusta (subject to supervisory approval and workload).
