Trade Compliance Specialist

Overview:

StaffBuffalo is working with a growing multinational organization in the Buffalo area to hire a Trade Compliance Specialist, paying $80,000-$90,000 per year, depending on experience. This is a newly created role with the opportunity to take ownership of the trade compliance function, build structure, and help shape processes as the organization continues to support international customers and supply chain activity.

This role is ideal for someone who stays current on customs requirements, global trade regulations, tariffs, product classification, international trade documentation, and government agency compliance. The Trade Compliance Specialist will serve as the internal liaison for trade compliance matters, customer compliance requests, audits, regulatory reviews, and documentation tied to sourcing, traceability, tariffs, and responsible business requirements.

The right person will enjoy creating checklists, strengthening SOPs, organizing documentation, and helping internal teams understand what is needed to remain compliant. This is a great opportunity for a detail-oriented, proactive compliance professional who wants to step into a visible role, partner across teams, and make a meaningful impact on how compliance is embedded into daily operations.

This is an on-site/hybrid position in the Getzville, NY area.

Responsibilities:

  • Own trade compliance activities related to customs, tariffs, HTS classification, country of origin, valuation, duty programs, Free Trade Agreements, and import/export documentation.
  • Review, code, approve, and reconcile customs duties, tariff activity, broker invoices, and related documentation with accuracy and consistency.
  • Serve as the primary internal liaison for customer compliance requests, questionnaires, audits, KYC documentation, regulatory inquiries, and international compliance reviews.
  • Manage responsible sourcing and sustainability-related documentation, including CMRT, EMRT, EcoVadis, traceability, ESG, and customer-driven reporting requirements.
  • Support CTPAT, ISO, audit readiness, internal reviews, corrective action follow-up, training coordination, and compliance recordkeeping.
  • Develop and maintain SOPs, checklists, trackers, training materials, and compliance procedures that create structure, consistency, and accountability across the organization.
  • Monitor regulatory developments impacting international trade, metals trading, customs activity, tariffs, and supply chains while partnering with internal teams to support compliant operations.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher required.
  • 5 years of related trade compliance, customs compliance, import/export, regulatory compliance, or customs brokerage experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of customs requirements, trade regulations, tariffs, HTS classification, country of origin, duty programs, and international trade documentation.
  • Customs brokerage experience or customs brokerage certifications are highly preferred.
  • Excellent attention to detail, documentation skills, and ability to maintain audit-ready records across multiple compliance programs.
  • Proactive, inquisitive, and ownership-minded, with the ability to create structure, build checklists, and improve processes independently.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to collaborate across Operations, Trading, Finance, Sales, customers, brokers, and external partners.

Benefits:

  • Competitive salary of $80,000-$90,000 per year, depending on experience.
  • Newly created role with the opportunity to shape the trade compliance function and build lasting processes.
  • Hybrid flexibility potential after training, with a broader expectation of three or more days on-site.
  • Health and dental coverage to support overall well-being.
  • 401(k) with company match for long-term financial planning.
  • Short-term and long-term disability coverage.
  • PTO, paid holidays, year-end bonus potential, and additional company benefits.
