Position Summary/Objective
The Operations Director is a senior leader responsible for initiatives on thrift store operations and expansion plans, and organization-wide management of facilities and fleet vendor resources. Reporting directly to the Executive Director, this role ensures that physical assets, retail enterprises, and contracted services operate efficiently, sustainably, and in alignment with the organization’s mission and strategic objectives.
Essential functions
Thrift Store Operations & Growth
Strategic Leadership and Financial Performance
- Provide oversight of thrift store operations including retail, warehousing, donation intake, and logistics.
- Lead the vision, strategy, and execution of thrift store operations to drive consistent revenue growth and mission impact.
- Collaborate closely with the Executive team to develop annual thrift store budgets, monitor financial performance, and recommend corrective actions on strategic development.
- Oversee preparation and presentation of monthly and annual financial and operational reports for the Executive Director and CFO.
- Monitor and analyze key performance indicators, including, but not limited to: profit margins, sales per square foot, year-over-year sales trends, cost per donation pickup, inventory turnover, ROI on marketing spend, labor cost ratios, and break-even analysis.
- Drive revenue growth through strategic planning and operational efficiency.
- Establish and monitor KPIs such as sales per square foot, production, and gross margins.
- Identify opportunities for expansion and enhancement of retail operations.
Thrift Store Operations Management
- Oversee all retail, warehouse, donation, salvage, deconstruction, and facility operations to ensure consistency, safety, and efficiency.
- Ensure stores deliver a positive and high-quality experience for donors, customers, staff, and volunteers.
- Supervise facility, vehicle, and equipment maintenance, including implementation of preventative maintenance programs.
- Develop systems and processes to ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, standards, and affiliate policies.
- Identify and address potential operational conflicts between store activities and other SVdP programs.
- Maintain regular presence on the sales floor and in operational areas.
Facilities Management
- • Oversee all organizational facilities, including shelter, supportive housing, offices, warehouses, and thrift stores.
• Supervise property management services, ensuring proactive management of vendor contracts.
• Develop and manage facilities budgets, preventative maintenance, and capital improvement plans.
• Ensure compliance with safety standards, building codes, and regulatory requirements.
Financial Stewardship
- • Develop and manage operational budgets.
• Collaborate on forecasting and capital expenditures.
• Analyze expenses and implement corrective actions as needed.
Leadership & Team Development
- • Supervise and support managers and staff responsible for facilities and thrift store operations.
• Foster a culture of accountability and mission-driven service.
• Provide coaching, performance management, and succession planning.
Compliance & Risk Management
- • Ensure adherence to local, state, and federal regulations.
• Develop internal controls to reduce operational risk.
• Maintain readiness for audits and inspections.
Required Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Operations Management, or related field required; MBA preferred.
Experience: 5–7 years of progressive operations leadership experience with multi-site oversight.
Skills: Strong financial acumen, strategic planning capability, vendor negotiation experience, and excellent communication skills
Physical Demands
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds; frequent standing, walking, bending, and site inspections; ability to work at a computer for extended periods.
Travel
- Regular travel between organizational sites within the Dayton District; occasional travel for training or conferences.
