Position Summary
The Learning Mentor for the Bobcat Trailblazer Program at St. Thomas University plays a vital role in supporting the academic, social, and personal development of students enrolled in the program. Mentors will work with students who require additional support to actively participate in classroom activities or reach their academic potential in a traditional classroom setting. They work in partnerships with families and students. Mentors support, motivate, and guide individuals in overcoming barriers that prevent them from achieving their full potential. Learning Mentors will create the BTW’s My Action Plan for Success (MAPS), which helps students develop self-awareness, metacognitive skills, goal setting, and independence. The presentation will include MAPS program development, examples of practical tools for students and teachers, and an opportunity to explore the development of a MAPS program. The team members will spend an average of 16 hrs. per week working on this project.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide one-on-one and small group academic support to students
- Assist students in developing effective study skills, time management, and organizational strategies
- Support students in navigating course expectations, assignments, and academic responsibilities
- Foster student independence while encouraging self-advocacy and personal growth
- Collaborate with program staff, faculty, and support services to monitor student progress
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of student interactions and progress
- Participate in team meetings, trainings, and program events as required
- Serve as a positive role model and mentor to students within the program
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience working with diverse student populations, particularly in higher education or support programs
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
- Ability to build rapport with students and maintain professional boundaries
- Demonstrated commitment to student development and inclusive practices
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team
- Prior experience in mentoring, coaching, or academic support roles
- Familiarity with students who benefit from individualized learning support
Work Schedule & Requirements:
- Must work 16 hours per week
- Flexible schedule based on program and departmental needs
- Must accurately track hours worked
- Required to submit a weekly timesheet and detailed activity log documenting daily tasks
- Must adhere to program, policies, and procedures
