Summary: A Ranger will be under the direction of a mid to high level Supervisor. Must be able to meet and handle the public in a professional and courteous manner. Monitor the users of Tammany Trace and related properties to ensure their safety and enforce rules if needed. Notify 911 of any serious violation or injury in the park/facility during and after normal business hours.

- Monitor park/facility conditions, including restrooms, grounds, trails, boardwalks, brush clearing, trash receptacles and clearing floors from rocks, litter, leaf and wood debris
- Conduct daily routines to open and close park entrances and facilities and maintain a visitor count
- Assist in control of harmful plants (poison ivy, invasive species, etc.) and noxious weeds in parking and garden areas
- Inform and advise park visitors and the public about park facilities, history and nature using literature, articles, artifacts, displays, tours, talks, maps, group organization and instruction. Promote the park and other parish ecotourism resources.
- Monitor severe weather situations and assist in providing weather updates as needed to the Tammany Trace and related properties
- Staying alert to any medical, safety or security issues and notifying supervisor and/or 911 of any emergencies; be familiar with the emergency manual and emergency procedures
- May be assigned to trailheads, pier, Kids Konnection or other facilities to help and assist
- Assisting with any paperwork and reports as directed
- Rangers will be required to assist in staffing special events outside standard working hours for Parish recreational events as needed
- Regular, consistent attendance is required
- Any other duties as assigned
Competencies: Employee must be able to operate basic office equipment, office computer and software, and other specialty equipment needed for the position. Employee must possess good communications skills both verbal and written. Must be able to handle the public in a professional and courteous manner. Ability to drive a standard transmission [non-automatic transmission] vehicle preferred.
Work Environment: The incumbent typically performs in an outdoor environment. This includes open and empty land, wooded areas, muddy areas, swampy areas, hot, humid, cold, and wed conditions that are consistent with outdoor projects. The incumbent may also be exposed to wildlife and bugs in the environment. This position may include work performed in an office environment for training, plan reviews, meetings, and project preparation and progress reviews.
Physical Demands: Medium work. Medium work involves lifting no more than 50 pounds at a time with frequent lifting, lowering, pulling, pushing and carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds. If someone can do medium work, we determine that he or she can also do sedentary and light work. Must be able to bend, stoop, kneel and climb in order to complete various job duties. Must be able to stand, sit and walk for extended periods, sometimes on uneven or rough terrain in various weather conditions. In addition, must be physically capable to perform daily functions of the Tammany Trace facilities and able to operate two wheeled scooters, etc.
Required Education/Qualifications: A high school diploma or equivalent GED required. Prior experience dealing with the public is preferred. Must be available for varied schedules, rotating shifts, weekends, holidays and special events. Must possess a valid Driver’s License.
