Summary: Works under the direction of the Supervisor 1 – Animal Control. The Animal Control Officer duties primarily include working in the field enforcing laws and ordinances pertaining to animals in St. Tammany Parish. This includes picking up stray, injured, and dead animals. Another significate duty area is preparing enforcement paperwork and preparing for court, and issuing citations, and permits. Must be able to work weekends and holidays.

  • Patrol for stray; resolve issues or help take care of problems/issues involving animals and violations of ordinances; assist police
  • Investigate Cruelty cases
  • Issue citations, send out certified letters for violations, assemble court packets, and appear in court
  • May be required to euthanize animals in accordance with policies and procedures set by the Department of Animal Services
  • Assist the public with adoptions, reclaims, and intakes
  • Answering the phones and assisting the front desk as needed
  • Required to be “On Call” on a rotational basis, dealing with emergency calls after hours, on weekends, and holidays
  • Regular, consistent attendance is required
  • Any other duties as assigned


Competencies:
Employee must be able to operate basic office equipment, office computers and software, copy machine, fax machine, and scanner. Must have the ability to gain working knowledge of animal control equipment, i.e. traps, nets, bite sticks, and control poles. The ability to euthanize animals will be required. Must also have the ability to develop and maintain an effective working relationship with co-workers and other law enforcement agencies.

Work Environment: The incumbent works in a typical office environment, but will also work in outside field areas of land which may include swampy and wet conditions. The incumbent may be exposed to wildlife and bugs in the environment. Position does involve constant exposure to animals.

Physical Demands: Medium work. Medium work involves lifting no more than 50 pounds at a time with frequent lifting, lowering, pulling, pushing and carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds. If someone can do medium work, we determine that he or she can also do sedentary and light work. Must be able to bend, stoop, kneel and climb in order to complete various job duties. Must be able to stand, sit and walk for extended periods, sometimes on uneven or rough terrain in various weather conditions.

Required Education/Qualifications: A high school diploma or equivalent GED and minimum one year of relevant work experience required. A valid Driver’s License is required. The employee must be able to complete the Certified Animal Euthanasia Course and obtain FEMA Certification.
