Position Title: Bookkeeper

Reports to: Rector

Position Summary: St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. located in Ridgefield, CT, is looking for a part-time Bookkeeper to maintain its financial records. St. Stephen's is a parish within the Episcopal Diocese of CT (ECCT) with a mission of embracing and living God's commandment to love our neighbors - through worship, stewardship, and service to others.

Major Responsibilites:

  • Oversee all accounting functions using QuickBooks Online (QBO), including A/R, A/P, bank and credit card reconciliations, payroll, investments and Vestry designated and Donor restricted funds.
  • Integrate QBO and church member database to keep up to date all pledge and other payment information.
  • Manage cash flow, including gaining approval of and paying all expenditures and transfers of funds.
  • Analyze and present financial and statistical reports in an accurate, timely manner.
  • Produce financial materials for presentations to staff, Vestry, Finance Committee and others as appropriate.
  • Suggest financial improvements, procedures and cost efficiencies.
  • Provide information for preparation of the annual budget in coordination with the Chair of the Finance Committee.
  • Provide information as requested for preparation of the annual parochial report.
  • Implement a robust grants/contracts management and financial reporting system, ensuring adherence to grants/contract billing and collections schedules in support of operational requirements.
  • Update and implement all necessary business policies and accounting practices.
  • Perform monthly account reconciliations and quarterly tax reporting reconciliations.
  • Maintain relations with organizations relating to finance, including The Episcopal Diocese of CT, banks, investment advisors and insurance companies.
  • Coordinate the year-end audit with St. Stephen’s external auditors.
  • Other duties as requested by parish leadership.

Qualifications needed:

  • Strong proficiency with QuickBooks Online
  • 4 years bookkeeping experience
  • Experience with accounting principles
  • Proficient with Excel and Microsoft Office
  • A background check is required prior to employment

Compensation/Work Arrangement: This is a 1099 subcontractor position working in a hybrid capacity. Compensation is $49.00/hour for 15 hours per week. Additional hours may be necessary during high work periods (e.g. audit, preparation for church holidays)

Confidentiality: Bookkeeper may gain access to certain confidential or proprietary information during work. Such "Confidential Information" shall include parishioner pledge and personal data, staff salary and personal data, information concerning the: business, affairs, products, marketing, systems, technology, end-users, financial affairs, accounting and statistical data belonging to St. Stephen’s. The Bookkeeper will agree to hold all such information in strict confidence and shall not, without the express prior written permission of St. Stephen’s leadership disclose such Confidential Information to third parties; or use such Confidential information for any purposes whatsoever, other than the performance of his/her duties.
