JOB SUMMARY

The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Coordinator is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining comprehensive safety, environmental, and regulatory compliance programs across all St. Petersburg College locations. This role focuses on hazard identification, risk mitigation, training, regulatory adherence, and improvement of the college's physical, chemical, biological, and environmental safety posture.

Reporting directly to the Emergency Management Director, the Coordinator serves as the subject matter expert for EHS, providing technical guidance, clear interpretation of federal, state, and local regulations, and fostering a culture of safety across the college community.

This position requires an on-campus presence and travel to various SPC locations within Pinellas County. Occasional after-hours response to incidents is expected

Essential Personnel

This function/position has been designated as "critical." This means that it has job duties that affect the security, safety or physical operation of the College, and are required to work at the Emergency Operations Center and/or have access to the incident scene once normal campus operations have been suspended.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Program Management and Compliance Oversight:

  • Lead the development, implementation, and improvement of the College's Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Program.
  • Coordinate and conduct safety and risk management audits, including:
  • Vendor-led inspections and service coordination
  • Technical review of inspection reports to identify hazards or non-compliance
  • Oversight of required Operating Permits and renewal processes
  • Management of the Right-to-Know and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) system
  • Maintain compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local safety, environmental, and occupational health regulations, including OSHA, EPA, DOT, and NFPA standards.
  • Conduct laboratory, workspace, and facility safety inspections, including monthly site reviews in collaboration with security teams.
  • Monitor hazardous materials storage, chemical hygiene protocols, and hazardous waste disposal in accordance with EPA and state regulations.
  • Perform driver's license checks for SPC vehicle operators using the DAVID system.
  • Ensure appropriate testing, inspections, and maintenance of safety equipment, including eyewash stations, emergency showers, and AEDs.
  • Ensure an accurate and shareable chemical inventory is maintained.

Training and Education:

  • Coordinate and facilitate required safety training for employees and students, including:
  • OSHA programs such as hazard communication, lab safety, and PPE use
  • Respiratory protection, fit testing, and medical evaluations
  • Bloodborne pathogen safety, Stop the Bleed, CPR/AED, and other medical emergency response training
  • Conduct regular training sessions to ensure compliance with internal policies and external regulations.
  • Maintain accurate training records and certifications to demonstrate compliance.

Incident Investigation and Response:

  • Serve as a primary responder to EHS-related incidents, including hazardous materials, environmental emergencies, and other safety events.
  • Investigate accidents, claims, and incidents by:
  • Determining causal factors and future risk potential
  • Compiling incident data and managing case files
  • Conducting safety audits and recommending corrective actions
  • Managing follow-up investigations and tracking resolution
  • Participate in the College's emergency preparedness and response efforts as essential personnel.

Medical Programs and Health Safety Oversight:

  • Coordinate required medical programs, including:
  • Hepatitis B vaccinations
  • Lead level blood testing for applicable personnel (e.g., Gun Range Air Conditioning systems)
  • Respirator physicals and fitness-for-duty assessments
  • Collaborate with medical providers and vendors to ensure all health and safety requirements are met.

Operational Documentation and Fiscal Oversight:

  • Prepare and maintain operational documents, inspection records, audit reports, and regulatory documentation.
  • Monitor safety program expenditures and review vendor billings to ensure the most cost-effective use of College funds.

Stakeholder Collaboration and Continuous Improvement:

  • Foster a culture of safety awareness through collaboration with employees, students, faculty, and external partners.
  • Engage with regulatory agencies and serve as a liaison for inspections, audits, and compliance activities.
  • Actively participate in safety committees and working groups to enhance college-wide risk mitigation and emergency readiness efforts.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Associate degree in a safety or health related field; three (3) years of related work experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Basic risk management principles and practices;
  • Insurance terminology and risk evaluations;
  • Health, safety, and environmental principles and compliance requirements;
  • Hazard communication, chemical hygiene, and laboratory safety standards
  • Respiratory protection, PPE use, and medical monitoring programs
  • Investigative techniques and root cause analysis methods
  • Applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations, including OSHA, EPA, and NFPA
  • Recordkeeping principles, regulatory documentation, and reporting standards
  • Computers, Microsoft Office, and related software applications

Skills in:

  • Conducting investigations, incident reviews, and safety audits
  • Coordinating, presenting, and delivering safety training programs
  • Maintaining accurate records, reports, permits, and compliance documentation
  • Using computers, software applications, and data systems for compliance management
  • Applying effective communication and interpersonal skills when interacting with employees, coworkers, supervisors, students, and external partners to exchange information and provide direction

Ability to:

  • Interpret, analyze, and apply applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations
  • Identify hazards, assess risks, and recommend corrective actions
  • Collaborate with diverse stakeholders to promote a culture of safety and compliance
  • Respond to emergencies and perform investigative follow-up
  • Work independently, manage multiple priorities, and exercise sound judgment in complex situations

CERTIFICATION, LICENSE AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid FL Driver's License.
  • OSHA 511 qualified Instructor for General Industry Standards Certificate. (Within 12 months)
  • Certified in use of the Driver and Vehicle Information Database (DAVID).
  • FEMA IS-100, IS-200, IS-700, IS-800 (Within 12 months)

WORK ENVIRONMENT

May be required to work hours other than the regular schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays.

This position requires regular and reliable attendance and the employee's physical presence at the workplace.

Work is performed dealing with crisis situations that require making decisions involving people, resources, and property.

Pay: $46,878.82 - $58,723.53 per year
