Position Description
The Middle School Woodworking Teacher leads an imaginative, hands-on program where students transform ideas into tangible creations. From sketch to sawdust, this teacher guides young makers as they explore craftsmanship, design, problem-solving, and the joy of building something real.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and teach engaging woodworking courses for students in grades 5–8, while also developing a potential upper school course for the future that integrates artistry, creativity, and design thinking.
- Develop playful, developmentally appropriate projects—from simple toys to small furniture—that build confidence and skill.
- Encourage student voice and imagination by incorporating elements of choice, challenge, and open-ended design.
- Provide constructive, upbeat feedback and celebrate student effort, iteration, and growth.
- Maintain a safe, organized, and welcoming woodshop where students feel encouraged to take creative risks.
- Teach essential hand and power tool skills with a focus on safety, respect for tools, and good shop habits.
- Collaborate with arts, STEM, and core subject teachers to dream up imaginative, interdisciplinary projects.
- Share student work through exhibitions, displays, and school-wide events that celebrate craft and creativity.
- Contribute to the broader life of the school by sponsoring clubs, electives, makerspace afternoons, or other joyful programming.
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Fine Arts, Industrial Arts/Technology Education or related field required with Masters preferred.
- Experience teaching woodworking, design/technology, or a related craft—especially with energetic middle schoolers
- Strong knowledge of woodshop tools, materials, and safety practices.
- Ability to create engaging, inventive, and developmentally appropriate projects for grades 5–8.
- Excellent communication skills and a fondness for working with adolescents.

The St. Paul’s Schools has a compensation scale based on direct years of experience and degree held. For this opportunity, our salary range is $43,000 to $52,000 annually. Candidates with additional experience or qualifications may be offered a salary outside of the range shown.
