Job Summary
The Director of Children, Youth, and Family Ministry is responsible for planning, coordination, administration and evaluation of all aspects of the ministries for students, birth through 12th grade, and their families. Additionally, the Director of Children, Youth, and Family Ministry will support opportunities for families to be involved in and supportive of ministries for children and youth.
Essential Functions
- Provide strategic leadership and supervision of all Sunday, mid-week, and special children, youth, and family ministry events, including the recruitment, training and appreciation of volunteer and staff leaders; researching and selecting teaching materials, curriculum and other program materials; and overseeing the schedule for leaders and assistants.
- Partner with pastors, staff, and volunteers to develop and implement programs that enable and equip students and families for a lifetime of faith in action. Seek to increase participation in children, youth, and family programs, and foster communications and connections that help students, families, the whole congregation, and our surrounding community to engage with one another.
- Serve as a resource for parents and other family members to support children and youth, including providing support and encouragement through regular contact and communication, and opportunities for family activities with children and youth.
- Serve as the primary liaison with the dayschool childcare program offered at St. Paul’s.
- Collaborate with church leadership to identify and promote opportunities for children and youth to be involved in the Love, Seek and Serve ministries of St. Paul’s UMC.
Schedule: The position both offers and requires flexibility to meet the needs of children, youth, and families. On-site presence is expected for Sunday morning and evening activities, as well as all staff and program meetings. Attendance at other church leadership meetings may be occasionally needed as part of participation with the Love, Seek, and Serve teams for church-wide mission and ministry. The Director shall establish regular onsite office hours to include building relationships with dayschool staff and families. The ongoing schedule for the Director must be developed in collaboration with the Associate Pastor.
Tasks and Responsibilities
- Design children, youth, and family programming that maintains an inclusive, fun, and safe environment modeling the St. Paul’s welcome statement (see below).
- Maintain a consistent presence to lead and supervise children, staff, volunteers, and ministries, and to connect with children, youth, parents, caregivers, and the congregation.
- Recruit and train volunteers to support the children, youth, and family ministry, assuring compliance with Safe Gatherings certification and safety protocols.
- Supervise and schedule Sunday morning classroom leadership, including paid child care staff, and oversee Sunday morning attendance procedures for children, youth and volunteers.
- Lead a weekly gathering with youth to include learning experiences, discussion groups, social events, and service projects.
- Plan and lead a week-long out of town youth trip in the summer, including service and learning objectives.
- Participate in regular staff coordination and supervision meetings.
- Maintain regular communication about the celebrations and concerns of students and their families with pastors, staff, and ministry leaders.
- Communicate with other children and youth leaders in the community and in the United Methodist connection.
- Work with the Finance Committee to prepare and administer the budget needs for children, youth, and family ministry programs (including the summer trip), coordinate fundraising events, and exercise proper stewardship over the allocated budget.
- Work with the Communications Director to ensure effective communication with children, youth, parents, staff, and church lay leadership, utilizing a variety of resources to reach disparate audiences.
- Assist the Senior Pastor in preparing for Confirmation.
Minimum Qualifications
- One or more of the following:
- Baccalaureate degree (B.A. or B.S) in theology, religious studies, secondary education, or related disciplines from an accredited institution
- One year of experience successfully performing relevant work as described in the essential functions.
- Combination of education and experience relevant to the above (e.g., students pursuing a degree, especially seminary students)
- Ability to obtain approval from Safe Gatherings through the Great Plains UMC Conference for workers with children, youth and/or developmentally disabled adults.
- Ability to move freely in and out of different settings.
- Ability to speak in public forums.

- Previous experience with children, youth, or family ministries.
- First Aid and CPR certifications
