Position Summary
Mercy & Truth Healthcare Ministry, an FQHC Look-Alike serving 2 clinic locations, one in Wyandotte and one Johnson Counties to underserved communities in the Kansas City region, seeks a strategic and operationally strong part-time Finance Director/Controller, with the potential to grow into a full-time role.
This position reports directly to the CEO and serves as a key member of the leadership team. The Finance Director/Controller is responsible for both strategic financial leadership and daily financial operations, ensuring full compliance with FQHC Look-Alike standards, federal and state grant requirements, nonprofit accounting standards, and best practices in fiscal stewardship.
This leader must be both strategic and detail-oriented, capable of guiding long-term financial sustainability while ensuring accurate day-to-day execution.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Strategy
- Serve as the organization’s senior financial leader and strategic advisor to the CEO.
- Lead long-term financial planning, sustainability modeling, and revenue optimization strategies.
- Analyze and help maximize revenue across all lines of service (clinical, pharmacy, grants, donations, and new lines of service expansion).
- Support new business development initiatives with financial modeling and feasibility analysis.
- Ensure fiscal responsibility and sustainability aligned with mission and growth objectives.
Financial Operations & Oversight
- Oversee all accounting functions, including general ledger, AR, AP, payroll oversight, and financial reporting.
- Supervise and collaborate with the Assistant Controller to ensure vendors are paid timely and financial workflows are efficient.
- Work closely with our on-site pharmacy partner to manage and monitor 340B revenue and savings, ensuring accuracy, transparency, and compliance.
- Ensure proper donor receipting, gift recording, and contribution tracking in accordance with nonprofit standards.
- Maintain strong internal controls and financial policies.
- Oversee and manage the monthly close process.
Reporting & Board Engagement
- Prepare monthly financial statements and dashboards for the CEO to present at Board of Directors meetings.
- Present financial reports and analysis to the CEO for board and leadership team review.
- Develop and track key financial performance indicators.
- Provide timely financial insights to support executive decision-making.
Grants & Budget Development
- Prepare and manage budgets for federal, state, and foundation grants.
- Ensure compliance with updated grant budgets and applicable FQHC requirements.
- Track restricted funding and ensure proper allocation, reporting, and documentation.
Audit & Compliance
- Lead the annual audit process and serve as primary liaison to external auditors.
- Ensure compliance with FQHC Look-Alike regulations, HRSA expectations, and nonprofit financial reporting standards.
- Maintain readiness for financial reviews, grant audits, and regulatory oversight.
Leadership & Organizational Participation
- Participate in executive and leadership team meetings.
- Contribute to strategic planning and cross-departmental initiatives.
- Help foster a culture of fiscal discipline, transparency, and accountability across the organization.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred).
- Minimum 5–7 years of progressive financial leadership experience.
- Experience in nonprofit healthcare, FQHC, or federally funded environments strongly preferred.
- Experience managing 340B revenue within an FQHC or similar healthcare environment strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated experience managing audits and preparing board-level financial reports.
- Strong understanding of healthcare reimbursement structures and nonprofit accounting.
- High integrity, strategic thinking ability, and strong organizational leadership skills.
