Overview
The primary duty of the Groundskeeper is the planting, pruning, and cultivating of trees, shrubs, and flowers, and seeding, fertilizing, mowing, and trimming of all School grounds including faculty homes. The Groundskeeper participates in the removal of snow, ice, leaves, fallen branches, other weather-generated debris, and trash from all School grounds, and assists the Grounds leadership in the administration and management of grounds functions.
This position is responsible for athletic field and rink maintenance, improvements and renovation projects; scheduling of daily work, training and instruction of new staff members and vendors; and maintaining cooperation and good public relations between maintenance crew, faculty, staff, students and visitors.
Shift Hours: 6:00AM - 2:30PM *
* Schedules may adjust based on the needs of the School (example: overnight snow removal)
Responsibilities:
- Timely maintenance and preparation of game and practice athletic/multipurpose fields/rinks/courts to ensure safe conditions for players and spectators
- Perform building and grounds maintenance and improvements at all athletic field complexes and practice field facilities
- Safe operation and preventive maintenance of light and heavy ground vehicles and equipment, and hand tools to perform functions including infield groomer, Zamboni, mower, weed eater, trencher, skid loader, utility vehicles, tractors, aerification and seeding equipment, and a variety of trucks
- Assists with the inspection of work progress, equipment, or construction sites to verify safety or to ensure that crews are performing work according to specifications and standards
- Inspect vehicles, maintain detailed records of vehicle servicing and inspection and scheduling regular vehicle maintenance to ensure operational efficiency
- Manage the registrations and licenses of all vehicles and trailers
- Cleaning the interiors and exteriors of fleet vehicles, disposing of trash, vacuum floors and sets, polish/clean interior surfaces including the inside of the windshield and windows, waxing the exterior of the vehicles and tire detailing
- Assist with the planning and implementation of turf management program and irrigation operations and repairs
- Performs snow and ice removal on parking lots, sidewalks, driveways, stairs and trails
- Sets up and tears down for special events and activities
- All other duties as assigned
Job-Related Capabilities:
- Ability to work in extreme weather conditions
- Ability to lift, carry, push and pull up to 100 pounds, and stand for extended periods
- Ability to operate various grounds equipment including Zamboni, backhoe, loader, bobcat, tandem dump truck, brush hog, skid loader, ditch witch, and trenching equipment
- Ability to perform work in a safe manner, securing work site and following work zone safety rules, wearing safety equipment and PPE such as safety glasses, boots, gloves, hearing protection, helmets and harnesses
- Ability to be on call 24 hours a day for emergency purposes; follow directions; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; and organize equipment requirements necessary for daily assignments
Education / Experience:
- Requires a high school diploma, or equivalent
- 2 years’ experience in general park grounds and facility maintenance, building trades and construction, maintaining ground and construction equipment or closely related work
License Qualifications:
- Must have a valid Massachusetts driver’s license
- A MA CDL Class A & B license with air brakes and tank endorsements preferred
- Current horticulture certification preferred
- Pesticide Applicator Certification preferred
