Position Summary
The Director of Human Resources at St. Mark’s Church, Inc., is a senior administrative leader responsible for the strategic oversight and daily administration of all human resources functions for an both St. Mark’s Church, Inc. and St. Mark’s Episcopal School serving PK2–Grade 8 school employing approximately 110 faculty and staff members. Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer, the Director of Human Resources serves as a strategic partner to school leadership and plays a critical role in advancing the school’s mission, values, and commitment to excellence in education.

This is a full-time, on-site administrative position. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required to support school events or operational needs.

Leadership and Strategic Planning
- Advise the Chief Financial Officer and senior leaders on human resources strategy, organizational effectiveness, and workforce planning
- Support the development and implementation of policies and practices that reflect the church and school’s mission, strategic plan, and commitment to equity and inclusion
- Promote a culture of professionalism, collaboration, and continuous improvement
- Oversee all recruitment and hiring processes for faculty, staff, and administrators in accordance Best Practices and equal employment opportunity standards
- Ensure consistent, equitable, and legally compliant hiring practices
- Lead onboarding and orientation processes to support the successful integration and retention of new employees
- Provide guidance and support to supervisors and employees on performance management, evaluations, and professional growth
- Serve as the primary administrator for employee relations matters, including conflict resolution, disciplinary action, and separations
- Foster clear communication and trust among faculty, staff, and administration
- Administer compensation and benefits programs to ensure competitiveness, internal equity, and alignment with the church and school’s financial resources
- Collaborate with the Business Office and external vendors to oversee payroll, benefits enrollment, leaves of absence, and retirement programs
- Participate in salary benchmarking and long-range compensation planning
- Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations
- Develop, maintain, and regularly update employee handbooks, policies, and procedures
- Maintain accurate and confidential employee records
- Coordinate investigations and responses related to employee complaints, grievances, or legal matters, in consultation with legal counsel as appropriate
- Support professional learning initiatives for faculty and staff in collaboration with the church and school’s leadership
- Provide training related to workplace expectations, policies, and supervisory best practices
- Assist with succession planning and leadership development efforts
- Manage HR systems, documentation, and reporting for approximately 110 employees
- Analyze HR data to inform decision-making and improve organizational effectiveness
- Serve as the primary liaison with legal counsel, benefits providers, insurance carriers, and HR consultants
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Education, or a related field
- Prefer Master’s degree with SHRM HR Certification
- Minimum of 5–7 years of progressively responsible human resources experience, preferably within an independent school or nonprofit organization
- Thorough knowledge of employment law, HR best practices, and employee relations
- Demonstrated ability to manage sensitive and confidential information with discretion and professionalism
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
- Commitment to the mission and values of independent school education
- Sound judgment, integrity, and professionalism
- Collaborative leadership style with the ability to build trust across the community
