Job Brief
We are seeking a dedicated, knowledgeable and compassionate Animal Shelter Assistant Manager to help with the daily operations of our non-profit animal shelter in Ogdensburg, NY. This primarily includes assigned duties that directly provide animal welfare, enrichment and engagement. The duties shall be performed in compliance with the SLV SPCA Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and the current NYS Department of Agriculture & Markets Article 26C Regulation of Animal Shelters. All work shall be performed under the supervision of the Animal Shelter Manager, or others as designated.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Provide and/or replace food and water once or twice daily. Document the eating and drinking habits and/or irregularities of each animal electronically, i.e. on a SLV SPCA computer tablet. This may include special requirements as needed on an individual animal basis.
- Document the waste elimination habits and/or irregularities of each animal electronically. Assist in the subsequent cleaning, disposal and sanitizing of the cage/kennel space, as needed.
- Assist the Shelter Manager in the provision of in-house medical treatment.
- Assist in the transportation of animals for shelter transfer, veterinarian care and/or public events using the SLV SPCA van.
- Provide animal social enrichment and engagement, which may generally includes walking dogs outside the building, light/non-aggressive play, interaction one-on-one and or amongst same or other species (i.e. dogs and cats). Observe, monitor and document electronically activity, behavior, irregularities and/or concerns. Proactively relay any concerns with the Shelter Manager.
- Assist the Shelter Manager with the input, maintenance and updates of detailed records in the SLV SPCA Shelter Manager software including in-house or off-site medical treatment, histories, adoption and transfer information.
- Assist in implementing and conducting fundraising events and campaigns.
- Assist staff in public interaction to promote responsible pet ownership and animal welfare.
- Assist in the general maintenance and cleanliness of the shelter facilities, as needed.
- Network with other animal welfare organizations and the community to promote the shelter’s mission.
Qualifications
- Proven work experience in animal care and management, preferably in a shelter environment is preferred
- Proficiency in computer and software skills
- Document experience and skills in animal care and management
- Ability to handle animals safely and humanely
- Strong communication, public speaking and organizational skills
- Post-secondary degree and/or certification in Animal Science or a related field is preferred but not required
- NYS Driver's License is preferred but not required
