St. Johnsbury School District is seeking a School Nurse to replace a retired employee. The St. Johnsbury School District (STJSD) serves more than 1,000 students, Pre-K through 8th grade and tuition our high school students to several area public and independent high schools. St. Johnsbury School District has approximately 550 students in Prek to Grade 8 and approximately 200 full-time employees all in one school. We have an excellent outdoor educational space, new playgrounds and a dedicated team with an emphasis on employee wellness. We are located 4 minutes from I-91 at Exit 21.

 

 

School Nurse Job Description

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree from a nursing program accredited by the National League for Nursing (NLN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
  • Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of Vermont.
  • Current certifications in: CPR with AED.
  • Four years (6000 hours) of clinical nursing experience,  preferably in community health or pediatrics, beyond nursing education.
  • Hold a current Vermont Educator’s License with an endorsement as a school nurse.
  • Must participate in a mentoring program matched with a school nurse for 1-2 years for new positions. 

 

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Healthcare Provider

 

  • Strengthens and facilitates the educational process by modifying or removing health related barriers to learning in individual students. 
  • Promotes an optimal level of wellness for students and staff. 
  • Assumes responsibility and accountability for the assessment of the health needs of a student, a plan of action, implementation, and evaluation of the plan.  
  • Practices in accordance with the current standards and functions  as defined by the Vermont Nurse Practice Act, the ANA code of ethics  and Standards of Practice: School Health Services. 
  • Delegates and supervises specific health care duties to a designated person(s) in the school setting.  
  • Serves as the direct link between the school, health care providers, families and community agencies to assure access and continuity of health care for the students.  
  • Provides care, relevant instruction to students, faculty and families for student care, health counseling and guidance to students.
  • Alerts the Vermont Department of Health of reportable communicable diseases when identified and compiles and submits required health data annually.
  • Participates as the health professional member on a variety of teams, including the child education evaluation teams that develop Individual Education Programs (IEPs), 504 Plans, Educational Support Team (EST) recommendations, and other specialized plans for students.
  • Assists in developing, implementing, and/or overseeing procedures and protocols for the prevention and management of injuries and acute and chronic illness.
  • Maintains membership to professional associations to keep current with advocacy, resources, legislation, and research.
  • Facilitates in the management of the dental program by scheduling dental van visits, promoting the program, disseminating and collecting applications and assisting with the clinic flow. 
  • Compiles and maintains appropriate information including student health records and immunization records.  
  • Accurately documents in the daily visit log, the medication log and on accident reports.
  • Provides mandated screening programs with appropriate referrals and follow-up.

 

Leadership

  • Collaborates with community organizations and Health Care Providers in order to promote student and family health in the school and larger community.
  • Acts as a professional leader within the school representing health issues as well as school community professional issues.
  • Uses research based practices and reviews health office data in order to inform their practice.



Health Education

 

  • Uses the health services as a means of teaching health.
  • Provides in-service training for health related issues as indicated.
  • Acts as a resource person and consultant for health education in the classroom setting.
  • Provides information and counseling to the staff and parents concerning individual student health problems, including participation in 504’s, ESTs, IEPs, and other meetings as needed.
  • Provides staff and parents with  information on current health practices and health issues, including identifying and dealing with health problems and locating resources 
  • Teaches health related topics in classrooms in collaboration with a licensed teacher as needed.

Evaluation:

  • Nurses receive supervision from the School Nurse leader and evaluations from the Principal using the same schedule as other teaching staff. 

 

The School Nurse maintains professional competencies through in-service, educational conferences, professional meetings, and/or self selected professional growth activities. Meets the requirements for continuing relicensure per the VT Agency of Education. 

 

 

Salary follows the Teacher's Collective Bargaining Agreement and is based on years of experience and educational level. Teachers get vested in the State Teacher's Pension after 5 years of service.  Teachers work 186 days each school year. Teachers receive 15 sick days, 4 emergency days, 5 personal days, 5 bereavement days. BCBS of Vermont is the health insurance. The employer pays the first $1900 for single coverage or $4000 for multi-person plan of the out of pocket costs plus 100% of prescription costs. Employer pays for single dental coverage, employee's life insurance and employee's long term disability insurance.  We have an amazing Employee Wellness program. We also have half-days during inservice of employee wellness with many choices to participate. Salary : $47,305 - $85,054
