JOB SUMMARY
Under the supervision and/or direction of the Charge Nurse, responsible for providing care for patients at the appropriate level of care allowed by their respected scope of practice according to the WY Office of Emergency Medical Services and WY state board of Nursing. The CCTP provider will be expected to maintain skill and medication knowledge by attending trainings both in-house and other. May assist with medical treatment and care of patients throughout SJH under the direction of physicians, RNs, and in accordance with SJH policies and competencies and always within their scope of practice. Provides assistance in accordance with the methods and procedures of the hospital. Responsible for unit clerk/secretary duties, monitoring, recording of, and interpreting critical patient heart rates and basic arrhythmia. Adheres to and practices the St. John's Health Corporate Compliance Program and participates in Performance Improvement activities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Patient Care
· Helps prepare patient room, bed, environment for patient admission, returning surgical patient, transfer or emergency patient.
· Initiates preliminary data such as weight, vital signs and monitor application.
· Assists in, and as necessary, accompanies patient in the admission, transfer and discharge procedures.
· Provides morning care (bed bath, changing bed linens, dressing patient) and evening care (back rubs, freshening linens, mouth care, etc.) and other general care as necessary through out the day.
· Takes and records temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, weight, height, and I and O measurements as directed.
· Assists with preoperative and postoperative care, such as positioning patient, lifting and turning patient, using proper body mechanics; applying, using equipment and ambulating patients as directed.
· Prepares patient for meals, distributes food trays, assists or feeds patient as needed.
· Provides care for patients in isolation, following appropriate techniques.
· Provides postmortem care as directed.
· Makes rounds of patients, anticipates needs, and answers or responds to patient call lights and paging.
· Maintains, develops and updates skills to implement ideal care and service.
· Floats to ICU and other units as needed.
· Performs wound care after demonstrated competency.
Other Duties
· Handles and cares for patient clothing and other personal property (including prosthetic devices, hearing aids, dentures, glasses, contacts lenses, etc.) from admission to discharge.
· Transports patients to and from various areas when directed.
· Collects specimens and transports to proper areas as requested.
· Reports to the Charge Nurse any changes observed in condition or behavior or patients.
· Assists in maintaining a safe and clean environment by reporting equipment that is out of order, reporting other problems to management. Cleans equipment as assigned and keeps hallways clear.
· Establishes and maintains interpersonal relationships with patients, visitors, and other personnel while assuring confidentiality of patient information.
Paramedic Responsibilities
· Phlebotomy certification and/or demonstrated competency with routine blood draws.
· IV Certification and/or demonstrated competency with routine IV starts and access.
· Medication admininistration to be done under the guidance of the Registered Nurse. Paramedics may administer any medication if they have been Educated (trained to use the medication) AND Certified (has demonstrated competence in itsproper use and side effects) AND Credentialed (authorized by medical director to use or perform the skill or medication).
· Airway and breathing skills--basic and advanced airway management NOT including intubation. All skills under the guidance of a registered nurse or respiratory therapist, and after demonstrating competency
· EMS report on the prompting of the charge nurse.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Education
Required: Completion of a Paramedic course, complete Basic Dysrhythmia course within 6 months of hire.
Minimum Work Experience
Required: 6 months of acute care experience
Preferred: One year acute care experience or equivalent.
Required Licenses: Current Paramedic license from WY EMS office and BLS required at the time of hire. CPI required within 6 months of hire.
FUNCTIONAL DEMANDS
Working Conditions
Hospital clinical areas. Frequent stressful and emergent situations. May need to float to other departments as directed. Must be on-site at the SJH campus or other facilities to fulfill the responsibilities of this role.
Physical Requirements
Irregular breaks and meals. Frequent lifting and moving patients and equipment. 80% of the time walking and standing. Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Intermittent bending, stooping, twisting, sitting, pushing and pulling. Some computer and telephone use.
