What are the responsibilities and job description for the Landscape Technician I position at St John's College?
Reports To: LANDSCAPE SUPERVISOR
DUTIES: Responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the college grounds which includes both on and off-campus properties. Assists with watering, feeding, weeding, raking, mowing and cleanup of campus grounds
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for campus recycling and trash removal. Performs on-going landscaping which includes but is not limited to; installation and maintenance of grass, trees, shrubs, flowers, roads, walkways and the building of retaining walls. Possible installation of flower beds and perform fire mitigation.
- During the winter months is on an on-call basis for the removal of snow and ice from the college parking lots, roadways, sidewalks, and driveways of off-campus properties. Spreads ice melt on roads and sidewalks.
- Occasionally assists other B&G departments with physical labor.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned. Supervises student employees when needed.
- Acts as dogcatcher or unwanted live or dead animal remover
PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS:
- To provide a well maintained, clean, neat, safe campus and related properties.
- To be courteous, conscientious and professional with students, faculty, staff and co-workers.
- To maintain a thorough knowledge of methods, materials, and tools used in maintaining the campus.
- To learn and increase knowledge of campus plant materials and their care.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
- One year of grounds keeping or similar experience. Knowledge of when to and the ability to prune, spray, and fertilize trees, plants, and lawns. Knowledge of plant materials and their required maintenance. Knowledge of safe and efficient operating techniques for various machines and vehicles. Physical stamina and ability to stand, walk, and stoop for prolonged periods of time. Valid driver's license required.
- High School diploma and two years trade school or college. Master Gardener's certificate is desired.
- Ability to interact and relate to all members of the College community and the general public via verbal, written and electronic communication.
- Able to stand, walk, lift, stoop, and use tools for long periods of time.
- Outdoors, year-round in all types of weather.
COMPENSATION: Grade 4 (Minimum hourly $16)
