Job Description: Optometric Technician / Front Desk
The Optometric Technician / Front Desk team member is responsible for providing exceptional patient care while supporting the Optometrist with clinical testing and assisting with front office operations. This position plays a vital role in ensuring efficient patient experience by performing preliminary eye examinations, gathering patient information, scheduling appointments, and maintaining accurate medical records.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
- Assist the Optometrist with patient examinations and clinical procedures.
- Perform preliminary eye health testing, including:
- Visual acuity testing
- Glaucoma screenings
- Blood pressure measurements
- Pupillary distance measurements
- Optomap retinal imaging
- Visual field testing
- Auto-refraction testing
- Obtain and document patient medical histories, medications, allergies, and chief complaints.
- Prepare patients for examination and communicate pertinent information to the provider.
- Maintain accurate documentation within the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
- Clean, disinfect, and maintain examination rooms and ophthalmic equipment according to established protocols.
- Follow all infection control, HIPAA, and clinic safety guidelines.
Front Desk Responsibilities
- Greet and check in patients in a courteous and professional manner.
- Schedule, reschedule, and confirm patient appointments using the EHR system.
- Answer incoming telephone calls and direct calls appropriately.
- Verify patient demographics and insurance information.
- Collect copayments and other patient payments, as applicable.
- Maintain patient records and ensure accurate documentation.
- Assist with scanning, filing, and other administrative duties.
- Coordinate patient flow to help maintain an efficient clinic schedule.
General Responsibilities
- Attend required staff meetings, online training, and continuing education.
- Assist other departments and clinic locations as needed.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
- Provide excellent customer service while demonstrating professionalism, compassion, and respect.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Paraoptometric Certification preferred.
- Previous medical office or optometric experience preferred but not required.
- Basic knowledge of medical terminology is preferred.
