Job Summary and Qualifications The Laboratory Supervisor is Responsible for the overall operation of the Department and orientating, evaluating, and documenting competency of testing personnel. Establishes, maintains and revises Departmental policies and procedures to include Departmental programs, quality control, performance improvement and safety. Oversees and reviews patient test results and quality control results and takes remedial action when indicated. Maintains Departmental expenses and productivity as budgeted. Hires and directs departmental staff in the performance of their duties. Interviews all prospective technical and non-technical applicants (High Risk/High Volume). Oversees Departmental and general orientation and training of employees (High Risk/High Volume). Conducts competency testing and performance appraisals for employees. Counsels employees when indicated in accordance with Hospital and Departmental policies. Utilizes staff effectively through scheduling and work assignments. 2. Oversees and maintains the following department programs. Institutes and revises Departmental policies and procedures. Develops and maintains Departmental quality assurance and quality control programs taking corrective action when indicated (High Risk/High Volume). Follows and enforces all safety policies High Risk/Low Volume). Assists with continuing education programs within the Laboratory. Utilizes the following tools to manage resources to ensure adherence to budget. Maintains expenses within a budgeted variance. Uses schedule and work assignments to maximize efficiency while remaining within a budgeted variance. Identifies and recommends items for capital purchase Evaluates data to determine the most cost effective methods and supplies. Addresses Departmental issues to ensure optimal delivery of Laboratory Services. Resolves technical problems when test systems deviate from the established performance specifications. Addresses employee concerns and conflicts according to Hospital policy. Addresses customer-related issues according to Hospital policy. Participates and utilizes “Total Quality Management” tools to address inter and intra-departmental issues (Modular Training, Process Improvement Teams, etc.). Creates a supportive climate by serving as a role model of guest relations behavior. Communicates via written, verbal, face-to-face, telephone and computer methods. 5. Performs laboratory testing. Competently performs all tests in moderate and high complexity testing. Follows laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analysis, reporting and maintaining records of patient results. Troubleshoots test systems and takes appropriate action when indicated. Promotes customer relations within the organization and in the community. Communicates with laboratory staff and customers to promote quality guest relations. Maintains and supports a service-oriented relationship with its customers. Respects and maintains the confidentiality of information relative to customers. Strives to maintain a positive work environment. Creates a supportive climate by serving as a role model of guest relations behavior. Communicates via written, verbal, face-to-face, telephone, and computer methods. Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned. Performs all essential functions of the director in the director’s absence. Appropriately access secured rooms with locked medication storage containers in order to perform assigned job function, which does not include management if medications. What qualifications you will need: Required: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college; graduation from a clinical rotation or internship in an accredited medical technology program or a 50-week military training course or an acceptable equivalent which results in eligibility to take the registry exam in Medical Technology (Clinical Laboratory Science). Two years of laboratory testing in high complexity environment. Preferred: Five years of laboratory testing in a high complexity environment.
