Job Summary:

The primary duty of the Archaeology Administrator position is working for the Lighthouse Archaeological Maritime Program (LAMP), the maritime research division of the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum, Inc., in both a project archaeologist and administrative support role. This position assists with the day-to-day operation of LAMP, participates in public education and outreach activities, and supports field-based research, laboratory and computer analytical work, and report writing and production.

The Archaeology Administrator is expected to manage internal communications for the department, aid in the management of the department’s budgets and grants, facilitate success in joint work projects with external partners and other Museum staff, and assist with aspects of archaeological research and the drafting of relevant reports. The Archaeology Administrator will also be involved in the planning and execution of LAMP’s annual Field School program.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Under the leadership of the director, assures quality of work and performance management, including staying within budgets, aligning actions with organizational goals, and communicating needs within the department and across the organization.
  • Ensures department meets timelines and compliance requirements.
  • Leads department with all aspects of grants management, budgeting, and reporting.
  • Performs archaeological research and fieldwork, both terrestrial and submerged.
  • Helps train staff and volunteers in archaeological ethics, interpretations and methodologies, including vessel safety protocols. 
  • Facilitates planning and evaluation of artifact and cultural interpretations working closely with Museum staff.
  • Builds knowledge of and support for LAMP, the Museum, and its mission in the community through outreach programs and events.
  • Communicates effectively with the public and with other staff and volunteers.
  • Fosters, maintains, and encourages a productive working relationship with all staff members of the Museum.
  • Ensures the success of Museum programs as team player and support personnel.
  • Effectively uses computer programs and empirical research-based systems.
  • Serves as backup Captain and Dive Safety Officer.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Scope:

This is a full-time, professional position. May be a direct supervisor of students and interns. Works as a member of the archaeological team.

Qualifications:

  • Advanced archaeological or anthropological degree required.
  • Three (3) years relevant experience in a field setting.
  • Basic computer skills and experience with word processing and data-base systems management.
  • Excellent organizational skills and keen attention to detail.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and management skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent presentation skills.
  • Must be an American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) Scientific Diver, be able to provide Verification of  Training (VOT), or qualify as a LAMP Scientific Diver.
  • Must have a Captains License or the ability to obtain one.
  • Divemaster or Instructor experience preferred.
  • Training in CPR, AED, First Aid, and O2 administration.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time and to lift more than 35 lbs.
  • Ability to climb stairs, such as those in the lighthouse tower.
  • Ability to operate heavy machinery in or near water and safely operate dive equipment in an environment with students and multiple regulatory burdens.

Essential Functions/Physical Requirements:

The duties above indicated the essential functions of the job. Physical requirements are those needed aboard a sea-going vessel and support Museum operations. Optional flexibilities are required to meet sudden and unpredictable business needs. Modest amount (10-15%) of business travel is required. Must be a competent mariner able to deal with the demands of diving and assisting with a boat as well as navigating shifting conditions such as changing weather. Should hold requisite dive safety certifications. Must be able to stand for long periods and climb the lighthouse tower as required. A moderate amount of heavy lifting (15 %-20%) is required.
