Objective
To foster a dynamic environment that promotes and develops an understanding of the relationship of healthy body function and physical fitness.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Teach knowledge and skills in physical fitness.
- Develop or implement an early childhood fitness curriculum that targets gross and fine motor development.
- Demonstrate and explain basic skills, knowledge, and strategies of games and body movement.
- Establish and maintain standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, safe environment in the physical education areas.
- Provide safety instructions and make safety checks on equipment and fitness areas to ensure the overall safety of students.
- Provide maximum participation for all students by utilizing a variety of teaching methods to meet the needs of students with diverse ability levels.
- Provide ongoing feedback to students to encourage them to develop their fitness level.
- Monitor students’ progress, strengths, and weaknesses, and communicate these when necessary to parents/guardians, faculty and administrators.
- Communicate effectively and timely with parents/guardians, administrators, and faculty as needed.
- Collaborate with colleagues across the early childhood center and athletic department.
- Attend and contribute in full, divisional, and departmental faculty meetings.
- Take an active role in professional activities and attend relevant professional meetings and conferences.
- Stay abreast of the latest advances in physical fitness education.
Work Environment
Physical demands include:
- Ability to demonstrate the appropriate skills and techniques to be used by the students.
- Ability to visually monitor students.
- Ability to operate fitness equipment.
- Sitting, standing, lifting and carrying (up to 25 lbs.), reaching, squatting, climbing stairs, kneeling, and moving equipment/boxes (up to 25 lbs.)
Position Type
This is a full-time position with teaching responsibilities from August – May. As with any independent school, teachers should be ready to chaperone class trips, perform typical day-to-day duties such as lunch and carpool duties, and engage fully in all school events that develop the student.
- Bachelor’s degree in physical education, physical therapy, occupational therapy, or related field preferred
- A minimum of three years classroom or clinical experience is preferred.
- Experience in fitness or gross / fine developmental programming for lower school students.
- First aid, CPR, and AED certifications required. This will be provided by the school, if necessary.
- Represent the school in the larger community in a positive manner that reflects the values of the school.
- Ability to interface and maintain effective relationships with students, faculty, administrators, and parents/guardians.
- Professional written and verbal communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in Google Suite required.
