About the Role:

The Tool & Die Technician plays a critical role in the manufacturing process by designing, fabricating, and maintaining precision tools, dies, and molds used in production. This position ensures that all tooling meets exact specifications to produce high-quality parts efficiently and consistently. The technician collaborates closely with engineering and production teams to troubleshoot and resolve tooling issues, minimizing downtime and optimizing manufacturing workflows. Attention to detail and a strong understanding of metalworking and machining principles are essential to maintain the integrity and performance of tools. Ultimately, the role supports the overall manufacturing operation by enabling the production of reliable, precise components that meet customer and industry standards.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of an accredited tool and die maker apprenticeship or equivalent technical training.
  • Proven experience in tool and die making or precision machining within a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong knowledge of blueprint reading, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), and precision measurement tools.
  • Ability to operate machine tools such as grinders, mills, lathes, and drill presses safely and effectively.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate degree or technical certification in tool and die technology or a related field.
  • Experience with CNC programming and operation.
  • Familiarity with CAD/CAM software for tooling design and modification.
  • Knowledge of metallurgy and heat treatment processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead small teams or projects related to tooling fabrication and maintenance.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, build, and repair tools, dies, jigs, and fixtures according to engineering specifications.
  • Perform precision machining operations such as grinding, milling, and drilling to fabricate tooling components.
  • Conduct regular inspections and maintenance of tools and dies to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
  • Collaborate with production and engineering teams to identify and resolve tooling-related issues promptly.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of tooling specifications, maintenance records, and modifications.
  • Utilize measuring instruments to verify dimensions and tolerances of tools and finished parts.
  • Implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance tooling efficiency and reduce manufacturing defects.

Skills:

The required skills enable the technician to interpret complex blueprints and specifications accurately, ensuring that tools and dies are fabricated to exact standards. Precision machining skills are applied daily to shape and finish tooling components, while proficiency with measurement instruments guarantees dimensional accuracy. Problem-solving abilities are essential for diagnosing tooling issues and implementing effective solutions to minimize production disruptions. Preferred skills such as CNC programming and CAD/CAM software usage enhance the technician's capability to design and modify tooling efficiently, supporting advanced manufacturing processes. Strong communication and teamwork skills facilitate collaboration with engineers and production staff, ensuring tooling meets operational needs and quality expectations.
