Most schools treat after-school as supervision. We treat it as the second half of the school day — the part where a scholar who almost got it finally gets it, and the part where a scholar who already got it goes further than the grade level allows. That takes a certain kind of adult: passionate, innovative, and committed to ensuring that every scholar leaves with greater confidence and understanding of academic concepts.
There is a quiet assumption in this country that children from certain communities cannot post top numbers. Our scholars already disproved it once — 88% of our 3rd graders passed the Mississippi ELA reading assessment on their first attempt, more than 10 points above the state average, and we hold the highest 3rd grade reading scores of any charter school in Mississippi. That did not happen by accident, and it did not happen only between 7:45 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
SR1 College Preparatory and STEM Academy is building a team of passionate, innovative, and results-driven Non-School Hour Educators for K–4 grade who are dedicated to one outcome above all others: every scholar succeeds. Be clear-eyed about what this is: we are a startup school in year four. Some of what you need does not exist yet — you will invent it. We want founding-team energy, not “that’s not my role.”
WHAT YOU'LL DO
● Build readers. Deliver small-group, high-dosage literacy instruction — phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension — aligned to the science of reading and to what our scholars’ daytime data says they actually need.
● Braid the two. Literacy is not a separate hour from STEM. Scholars read to investigate, write to explain their thinking, argue from evidence, and present what they built. You’ll make the connection explicit.
● Innovate — don’t recycle the school day. Design hands-on, inquiry-driven sessions scholars actually want to participate. If the standard approach isn’t moving a scholar, invent one that does.
● Own scholar success. You are not here to fill a couple of hours. You are accountable for growth you can point to, and you take that personally.
● Chase mastery, not attendance. Use running records, screeners, exit tickets, and daytime assessment data to catch up every scholar who may have fallen behind — and to push the ones who are already ahead.
● Hold the data up as a mirror. Check your own numbers honestly to answer the only question that matters: is what I’m doing actually working?
● Close the loop with day teachers. Your scholars have a homeroom teacher. Talk to them. Share what you’re seeing. Make the non-school hour and the school-day hour say the same thing.
● Facilitate, don’t lecture. Your scholars do the thinking, the talking, and the discovering.
● Live our commitment to excellence. A high bar for every scholar, and the support to clear it.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
● Visible passion for this work — scholars and families can tell in five minutes whether an adult wants to be there, and so can we
● An innovator’s instinct — you try things, measure them, keep what works, and stop what doesn’t
● Dedication to scholar success — you measure your own success by theirs, and you do not quietly accept a scholar who isn’t growing
● Mississippi teaching certification — held, in progress, or an alternate route you’re ready to start. Preferred, not required. Retired Educators welcomed to apply!
● Bachelor’s degree in education, a STEM discipline, English/literacy, or a related field — or demonstrated expertise and experience working with elementary-age children
● Strength in at least one of literacy or STEM, and genuine willingness to grow in the other
● A startup, entrepreneurial mindset — you see a gap and build the bridge
● High energy, real creativity, and unshakable professionalism
● A willingness to be measured — you go to the data to find out if you’re effective instead of waiting to be told, and you’d rather see an uncomfortable number early than a comfortable assumption all year
● Genuine warmth and the same high expectations for scholars of every socioeconomic background
● A conviction that a child’s ZIP code and a child’s ceiling have nothing to do with each other
● Ability to pass a background check

SCHEDULE AND COMPENSATION
● Extended Day: Tuesday–Thursday afternoons, 2:30–5:30 PM during the school year
● Saturday Academy and Summer Learning: additional paid opportunities available
● Hourly, competitive rate based on certification and experience
