SECC Lunch and Recess Aide Position Summary The Lunch and Recess Aide plays an important role in supporting a safe, positive, and welcoming environment for all students during lunch and recess periods. This position is scheduled daily on student attendance days when lunch is served, from 10:55 a.m. to 1:25 p.m. The aide actively supervises students, promotes appropriate behavior, supports social-emotional development, and helps ensure that students are safe, engaged, and ready to learn throughout the school day. Essential Responsibilities Lunch Supervision Actively supervise students during lunch periods, maintaining continuous awareness of student safety and behavior. Ensure students remain seated while eating and follow cafeteria expectations. Encourage respectful behavior, appropriate voice levels, and positive interactions among peers. Assist students with opening containers, managing spills, and navigating lunchtime routines as needed. Monitor and follow established food allergy and student safety protocols. Encourage student independence by supporting students in cleaning up their own eating areas. Cafeteria Set-Up and Clean-Up Assist in preparing the cafeteria for student arrival. Wipe and sanitize tables according to established schedules and procedures. Ensure eating spaces are clean, organized, and ready for the next group of students. Maintain active supervision of students while supporting cafeteria cleanliness. Recess Supervision Actively supervise students during outdoor and indoor recess periods. Maintain visibility and strategically position oneself to ensure all students are monitored. Remain mobile and engaged, avoiding prolonged conversations or clustering with other staff members. Promote safe, inclusive, and respectful play among students. Support students in problem-solving, turn-taking, and conflict resolution. Intervene promptly when play becomes unsafe or when student behavior requires redirection. Report injuries, accidents, and safety concerns immediately to the school nurse and administration. Student Behavior Support Reinforce school expectations and routines using clear, consistent directions. Utilize positive behavior support strategies and respectful language when redirecting students. Recognize that young children are developing self-regulation skills and provide appropriate guidance and support. Prioritize student safety and seek assistance when additional support is needed. Communication and Collaboration Communicate student concerns, behavioral observations, and safety issues to classroom teachers, guidance staff, nursing staff, and administration as appropriate. Maintain confidentiality regarding student information. Participate in required training and follow all district and school procedures. Seek clarification or assistance when questions arise and work collaboratively as part of the SECC team. Qualifications Ability to work effectively with young children in a school setting. Demonstrated patience, flexibility, and positive interpersonal skills. Ability to maintain vigilance and actively supervise groups of students. Commitment to fostering a safe, inclusive, and supportive school environment. Physical Requirements Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions during recess supervision. Ability to respond quickly to student safety needs. The Lunch and Recess Aide is expected to serve as a positive role model for students and contribute to a safe, caring, and engaging school environment that supports the success and well-being of all children.
