General Summary

Performs the essential task of school bus routing; and provides administrative support for the Transportation Department.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Determine transportation eligibility for students.
  • Answers telephones; and responds to questions from parents and school staff.
  • Performs related duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.
  • Adhere to rules, regulations and guidelines set forth by the Springfield School Committee.
  • Create and maintain school bus routes for all district schools.
  • Assist the Transportation Director with the essential tasks of sequencing all bus routes.
  • Contribute to the decisions made by the Transportation Director.
  • Maintain accurate, complete and correct student records in Versatrans and Power School.
  • Work in conjunction with all SPS staff in management of school bus routes.
  • Work in conjunction with all SPS school transportation vendors.
  • Work in conjunction with the Parent and Community Engagement Center staff to determine transportation eligibility for McKinney-Vento/Foster Care students.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to both internal and external customers.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Qualifications

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Education or related field. Education may be substituted for 3 years of experience in Transportation. Minimum 2-3 years experience, including experience in office setting and working with children.

Appropriate education substitutions can be made.

  • Knowledge of the city streets, intersections and traffic patterns
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment
  • Must possess exceptional organizational skills
  • Ability to create and use transportation reports from Versatrans.
  • Ability to make decisions based on policy and procedure governing school transportation.
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations governing traffic
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Versatrans Routing Program.
  • Ability to prioritize and assign work
  • Knowledge of training, orienting, and managing personnel
  • Ability to develop and write reports, policies, and correspondence
  • Ability to handle common inquiries or complaints
  • Ability to respond to questions from students, faculty, staff, and visitors
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Ability to use (or learn to use) computer software and systems applicable to the position
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and procedures
  • Ability to organize large volumes of detailed data and information
  • Ability to verify and maintain accuracy of detailed data and information, detect data errors
  • Ability to maintain well-organized materials, files, systems and tools
  • Ability to adapt to changes in work situations and priorities
  • Ability to reason/analyze; use logic to identify and resolve problems
  • Ability to evaluate, organize, and summarize data and information
  • Ability to establish and maintain constructive and cooperative interpersonal relationships with staff, peers, supervisors, or managers in the work unit and other departments, as well as with staff of outside entities and other individuals, as applicable to the essential duties and responsibilities

Physical Requirements

Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, a negligible amount of force frequently, and/or or constantly having to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

This position requires employee be in an office or similar indoor environment, outdoor environment or street environment frequently and at a construction site or in the community occasionally. Employee may be exposed to individuals who are rude or irate, extreme heat or cold, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, substances or waste and loud noises.
