Description

General Summary

Under general supervision, cleans the interior of transit buses and other vehicles; and related duties that may be assigned.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Cleans interior of transit buses including floors, seats, side panels, overhead panels, and windows using appropriate equipment and cleaning supplies.
  • Inspects interior of bus for cut seats, loose handrails, passenger mishaps, damaged advertising posters, obvious mechanical or apparatus defects, and reports such to the Lead Cleaner or delegate.
  • Brings any unsafe practice or condition to the attention of the Maintenance Supervisor or delegate.
  • Removes stains and graffiti; deodorizes and disinfects bus interior; and removes litter from bus interior.
  • Maintains decals on the buses; changes information posters as directed; and checks operator compartment for appropriate supplies and equipment and replaces as necessary.
  • Moves District vehicles from assigned parking area to cleaning bay and returns vehicles to assigned parking area.
  • Accurately maintains daily cleaning records.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • This position does not supervise others.

Fiscal Responsibility

  • This position does not have direct financial authority.

Minimum Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

Experience

Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job. Education and course work can substitute for years of experience. Typical qualifications would be:

  • One (1) year work experience involving general cleaning or janitorial work
  • A valid Oregon State Driver's License and a driving record acceptable to the District's insurance carrier.

Competencies for Successful Performance of Job Duties

Knowledge Of

  • Janitorial Best Practices - methods, principles and standard practices used in janitorial cleaning; proper use of industrial cleaning equipment and products; and occupational hazards and safety precautions followed in heavy-duty bus shops.

Ability To

  • Manual Dexterity - The ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects
  • Control Precision - The ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

  • Days vary based on seniority bid. Hours are from 7:00 pm to 3:30 am.

Physical Demands Definition

Continuous: 67-100% of the day

Frequently: 34 - 66%

Occasional: 6 - 33%

Intermittent: 1 - 5%

Each item below varies from day to day and from duty to duty:

Sitting - Intermittent to Occasional.

  • Surface – Bus seats or concrete.
  • Varies with duty being performed.

Standing – Continuous

  • Surface - concrete, tile, asphalt or steel bus floor.
  • May have to stand on aluminum or wooden ladder intermittently.
  • Performing some duties may require standing up to three hours at a time.

Walking – Occasional to Frequent.

  • Surface - concrete, tile, asphalt or steel bus floor.
  • Distance - 1 ft. to 400 yd. at a time.

Lifting - Frequently to Occasional.

  • Weight - up to 50 lbs.
  • Objects lifted - include, but not limited to miscellaneous parts and other objects.(Many parts weigh much in excess of 50 lbs. They can be lifted with a crane or forklift. Some parts under 50 lbs. can also be lifted with a crane or forklift.)
  • Intermittent over-head lifting.
  • Forklifts and cranes must not be operated unless training and permission have been obtained from the Director of Maintenance.

Carrying - Frequently to Occasional.

  • Weight - up to 50 lbs.
  • Objects carried - include, but not limited to miscellaneous parts and other objects. Distance - 1 ft. to 75 ft. (Many parts weigh much in excess of 50 lbs. They can be carried with a cart, crane or fork lift. Some parts under 50 lbs. can also be carried with a crane, cart or fork lift.)
  • Forklifts and cranes must not be operated unless training and permission have been obtained from the Director of Maintenance.

Pushing/Pulling - Intermittent to Frequent.

  • Weight - up to 30 lbs.
  • Objects pushed or pulled - include, but not limited to miscellaneous parts and other objects. Distance - 1 in. to 6 ft.
  • Forklifts and cranes must not be operated unless training and permission have been obtained from the Director of Maintenance.

Reaching/Handling with both hands and arms - Continuous.

  • Distance - varies a few inches to three feet.
  • Occasional overhead reaching.

Repetitive fine manipulation of hands - Continuous.

Bending/Squatting - Frequently to Occasional.

  • Bending from waist & knees.

Twisting - Occasional.

Climbing - Occasional to Frequently.

  • Height - 12 to 15 ft. On stairs and on ladders.

Crawling - Frequent.

  • Surface - primarily on concrete floor.
  • Distance - up to 10 - 12 feet.

Environmental factors

  • Indoors and outdoors.
  • Exposed to heat & cold, humidity, noise, fumes and oil.

Machines/Tools/Equipment used as part of the job. - Include, but not limited to, fork lifts, cranes, other tools, hand tools.

  • This position requires regular communication inside and/or outside the organization to exchange factual information that can involve explaining policies, procedures, services, and options. Decision making outside of routine tasks and responsibilities requires approval.

Compensation And Work Schedule

This position is a full-time, non-exempt position, eligible for the regular ATU benefits package. The pay rate begins at $25.18 per hour. Work is performed at night in internal and external environments with exposure to all weather conditions and challenging situations. Equipment utilized includes various transit buses, other vehicles and a two-way radio system. Employees must be able and willing to work any shift, including weekends, holidays, swing and graveyard shifts.
