What are the responsibilities and job description for the Automotive Coach Service Manager position at Spirit Lake Ford CDJR?
Great Service Managers Don’t Do It All. They Coach Their Teams to Win.
Are you the kind of leader who gets a team fired up, helps people get better, and turns a good service department into a great one? Then we should talk.
We’re looking for a proven automotive Service Manager who believes the job is about more than putting out fires and watching the numbers. We believe the best Service Managers are coaches first. They set the direction, build confidence, teach the process, hold people accountable, and give their team the tools to succeed.
This is an opportunity to build, improve, compete, and win—with a team that wants to get better and a leadership group that wants to help you succeed. We take performance seriously, but we also believe work should have energy, teamwork, friendly competition, and some fun.
What Great Coaching Looks Like Here
You know the score matters—but you also know how to coach the actions that change it.
- Coach service advisors on customer conversations, recommendations, presentation, follow-up, and closing.
- Help technicians improve inspection quality, communication, productivity, and consistency.
- Turn missed opportunities into teachable moments instead of just pointing out what went wrong.
- Set clear expectations, give direct feedback, recognize wins, and follow through.
- Build a team that takes ownership and understands how its daily actions affect results.
- Hire good people, develop talent, and make tough decisions when needed.
- Create a customer-first culture while protecting profitability.
- Use department numbers—including hours per RO, effective labor rate, production, and overall performance—to identify where coaching is needed.
- Make sure every customer receives a quality MPI and a clear, professional explanation of their vehicle’s needs.
- Work closely with Parts and other departments so the whole operation moves forward together.
This Is a Leadership Job—Not a Firefighting Contest
Of course, issues will come up. Customers need help, the shop gets busy, and plans change. But the goal isn’t for the manager to personally solve every problem. The goal is to coach a team that can solve problems, make good decisions, and deliver a great experience consistently.
We want someone who sees:
- An advisor who is struggling and thinks, “Let’s work on it together.”
- A technician who needs support and thinks, “How can I help them get better?”
- A customer complaint and thinks, “What can we learn and improve?”
- A missed sales or production opportunity and thinks, “Let’s find the gap and coach the process.”
- A team having a great week and thinks, “How do we build on it—and celebrate the win?”
You’ll have the authority to make decisions, build and develop your team, and make a real impact. That means using good judgment and doing what’s right for the customer and the company—even when the decision isn’t always the easiest one.
What You Can Expect
- A leadership team that wants you to succeed and will listen to your ideas.
- Room to lead, make decisions, and build a team you’re proud of.
- A performance-driven environment with clear goals and accountability.
- Opportunities to develop your people and grow your own career.
- A culture that values teamwork, customer experience, continuous improvement, and having fun along the way.
- The chance to make a real impact—not just manage the day-to-day.
Who Will Thrive Here?
A leader who walks in each morning thinking, “Who can I help get better today—and what can we do better as a team?”
If you’re a proven Service Manager, Fixed Operations leader, or high-performing automotive service professional who loves developing people, building a strong culture, and improving results, we want to meet you.
If you want to coast, this probably isn’t your place. If you want to coach, lead, grow, compete, celebrate wins, and build something great, let’s talk.
