Position Summary
We are seeking a Principal Electrical Design Engineer to provide technical leadership and engineering expertise across all phases of large-scale EPC projects. This position carries oversight of a specific project area, acting as the discipline representative ensuring technical accuracy in project execution. The Principal will perform and lead engineering assignments of advanced complexity under general supervision of the Discipline Lead Engineer.
Basic Requirements (Principal, 15 Years)
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Power Engineering
- Minimum 15 years of directly related work experience
- Advanced knowledge of discipline codes and standards
- Demonstrated experience managing and leading large EPC projects
- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred
- U.S. Citizenship required
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as Supervising Lead, providing guidance to engineers and designers
- Analyze and recommend technical solutions to complex engineering problems
- Develop and review specifications, design criteria, and design documents
- Perform and check engineering analyses, calculations, and material specifications
- Coordinate technical issues with other disciplines, project management, vendors, and clients
- Prepare motor schematics, wiring diagrams, and interconnection diagrams
- Develop and review estimates, schedules, and progress reports including effort-hour and staff forecasting
- Establish, control, and report material key quantities with analysis and forecasts
- Provide technical support for procurement including bid evaluations and vendor submittal review
- Support construction administration including responses to RFIs and field changes
- Develop complex area classifications and hazardous area design documents
- Execute work in compliance with Project Quality Plan, scope, cost, and schedule baselines
Preferred Design Experience
- Raceway Distribution: duct bank, embedded conduit, cable tray design; power plans
- Grounding & Protection: equipment grounding plans, buried ground loop, cathodic protection
- Diagrams & Schematics: single line diagrams, power panel schedules, motor schematics, interconnection diagrams
- Specialist Systems: lighting design, heat trace systems, hazardous area classification
Preferred Software Experience
- CAD/Modeling: MicroStation v8i, SmartPlant 3D (S3D), Revit, AutoCAD, Navisworks
- Analysis Tools: ETAP (power systems analysis), Visual Lighting Calculation, SmartPlant Electrical (SPEL)
Codes & Standards Knowledge
- NEC/NFPA: NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code), NFPA 70E (Electrical Safety in the Workplace)
- IEEE Standards: IEEE 141 (Power Distribution), IEEE 142 (Grounding), IEEE 308 (Nuclear Aux Power), IEEE 384 (Nuclear Separation Criteria)
Relevant Industry Experience
Strongly Preferred: Nuclear facilities, DOE-regulated environments, U.S. Federal Government agencies, Manufacturing/Pharmaceutical/Biotechnology
