The Spencerport School District is currently accepting applications for a Coordinator of Special Education - Secondary

Job Description: The Secondary Coordinator of Special Education is responsible for coordinating and managing programs and services for students with disabilities in grades 6–12. This role ensures compliance with state and federal regulations, oversees instructional programs, and supports staff development. The coordinator chairs Committee on Special Education (CSE) meetings, collaborates with district leadership, and assists the Director of Special Education in daily operations. This position reports to the Director of Special Education.

Responsibilities

Leadership and Management

• Inspire all collaborators to join in accomplishing the district mission through the strategic plan and long-range goals.
• Establish annual performance targets and monitor progress toward departmental goals.
• Develop and submit standards and program updates to the Instruction Office.
• Participate in Curriculum & Staff Development Council and Instructional Office meetings; support and carry out initiative outcomes from these meetings.
• Chair CSE meetings for school-age students and collaborate on services and programming.
• Ensure compliance with timelines and documentation requirements across secondary buildings.
• Manage Individualized Education Program (IEP) and 504 documentation processes for the middle school and high school.
• Oversee Extended School Year (ESY) planning, implementation, and oversight.
• Coordinate specialized programs and placements, including in-district and out-of-district options.
• Provide support with Frontline and data management for enrollment reports.
• Supervise special education office personnel and related service departments.
• Develop and manage staffing allocations for related service providers.
• Provide building coverage for administrators as needed.
• Support and participate in interviewing and onboarding new staff members.
  
  

Curriculum, Instruction, and Student Support

• Lead district processes for curriculum design, assessment development, and implementation.
• Oversee curriculum development for self-contained programs and research specialized instructional materials.
• Stay current on New York State Assessment for Students with Disabilities (NYSAA) Curriculum, Eligibility, and State Requirements.
• Support, development, and implementation of instructional support needs in the High School and Middle School staff.
• Manage home-school services for students with IEPs.
  
  

Climate and Culture

• Serve as an active member of district committees; Equity Team, MTSS Team at the building & district level.
• Co-plan and support the facilitation of monthly special education department meetings across secondary buildings.
• Conduct scheduled meetings with specialized programs (8:1:1, 12:1:1, Transition Class) and teacher leaders.
• Coordinate and participate in meetings with principals, Teacher Leaders, and the Director of Special Education.
• Organize district-wide meetings for psychologists and related service providers monthly.
• Bi-weekly planning and oversight of building school psychologists and chairperson(s).
• Address inquiries and concerns from parents, staff, and district personnel.
  
  

Operations and Resource Management

• Prepare and plan for Data Days and Superintendent Conference Days.
• Provide support with Frontline and data management for enrollment reports.
• Ensure compliance with timelines and documentation requirements across secondary buildings.
  
  

Professional Learning

• Conduct staff observations through the District APPR Process.
• Plan and deliver information to new staff for new hire orientation.
• Plan and deliver Special Education professional learning opportunities to building staff.
• Coordinate professional learning opportunities and remain current on special education research and best practices.
• Attend networking, professional learning, and regulatory offerings to stay informed on New York State Education Department (NYSED) compliance initiatives.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

The Secondary Coordinator of Special Education requires comprehensive knowledge of special education law, IDEA and Section 504 regulations, IEP development and implementation, Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), and New York State Assessment for Students with Disabilities (NYSAA) requirements. Essential skills include chairing Committee on Special Education (CSE) and Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE) meetings, curriculum development for specialized programs, staff supervision and evaluation, compliance management, and effective communication with caregivers, staff, and district personnel. This position requires the ability to coordinate complex services across secondary buildings (grades 6-12) simultaneously, manage related service provider allocations, including BOCES instructional staff, research and implement evidence-based instructional practices for diverse learning needs, and balance regulatory compliance with student-centered programming that prepares students for post-graduation success.

Appointment: Tenure track, twelve-month

Reports to: Director of Special Education

Supervises: Related Service Providers, Special Education Teacher Leaders, Office Clerk III
