What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director Environment Health Safety position at Spencer Rigby?
Director of Environmental Health & Safety
Location: Austin, TX / Anaheim, CA / Chicago, IL / Minnesota
Hybrid role with domestic travel up to 40% and international ~10%
Spencer Rigby has partnered with a global diagnostics leader in search of a Director of EHS, Biosafety, and Regulatory Compliance to own and elevate the function across 4 manufacturing sites (Austin, TX / Anaheim, CA / Chicago, IL / Minnesota).
The role is structured deliberately: EHS, biosafety, and regulatory compliance only, so the right leader can focus purely on strategy and execution instead of splitting attention across facilities. You'll be the company's most senior EHS voice, the go to person leadership calls on for risk mitigation, regulatory trends, and safety performance, with room to build, not just maintain.
The opportunity:
- Set and execute forward thinking EHS strategy across labs, manufacturing, field operations, and corporate functions.
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives aligned with ISO, OSHA, EPA, and biosafety standards.
- Own biosafety level compliance, chemical hygiene, PPE standards, and hazardous materials programs across sites.
- Partner with R&D and Manufacturing to embed EHS into product design and process changes from day one.
- Partner with Field Service and Applications teams on safe customer-site practices - electrical, mechanical, and biological hazard mitigation.
- Build incident reporting systems, trend analysis, and performance dashboards that keep leadership ahead of risk.
- Mentor and grow a team of 4, building the next generation of EHS leadership within the business.
What you bring:
- 10 years of progressive EHS experience, including 5 in life sciences, diagnostics, medical device, or biopharmaceutical.
- Proven leadership managing EHS teams across multi-site operations (2 sites minimum).
- Deep knowledge of OSHA, EPA, DOT, biosafety, hazardous waste, and chemical safety regulations.
- Track record of driving change in scientific and technical environments.
- Comfort managing multiple projects without sacrificing quality or compliance.
- Experience in FDA, ISO 13485, or GMP-regulated environments (preferred).
If protecting the people behind life saving diagnostics sounds like meaningful work, I'd love to hear from you!
