Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Optician Lab Technician to join our high-volume production laboratory. In this role you will be responsible for cutting (edging) lenses to frame specification, assembling and mounting finished lenses into frames, and performing the final quality inspection that determines whether an order ships or goes back for rework.

This is a hands-on, production-focused position in a fast-paced environment. Our lab processes several hundred pairs of glasses per day, and we are looking for a technician who can maintain that pace without allowing accuracy to slip. The ideal candidate takes genuine pride in craftsmanship, works efficiently under a steady queue of orders, and understands that a pair of glasses that is one axis off is a pair of glasses that has to be made twice.

Key Responsibilities

Lens Cutting and Edging

• Read, interpret, and verify prescriptions and job tickets, confirming sphere, cylinder, axis, add power, prism, and pupillary distance before production begins.
• Block, lay out, and edge single vision, bifocal, and progressive lenses to frame shape and specification using automated patternless edging equipment.
• Select the correct lens blanks, materials, and treatments for each order, and verify base curve, center thickness, and optical center placement.
• Produce accurate bevels, grooves, polishes, and drill patterns for full-rim, semi-rimless, and rimless frame styles.

Assembly and Finishing

• Mount finished lenses into metal, plastic, and rimless frames without marring, chipping, or stressing the lens or frame.
• Perform frame adjustments, alignment, and truing so that each pair is straight, balanced, and ready to wear on arrival.
• Hand-edit, tint, and hand-finish lenses as required by the order.
• Clean, polish, and package completed orders to our shipping standards.

Quality Control and Inspection

• Inspect and verify every finished pair against the original prescription and job ticket using a lensometer, and confirm compliance with ANSI Z80.1 tolerances.
• Check optical centers, segment heights, axis, prism, edge quality, cosmetic condition, and overall workmanship before an order is released.
• Identify the root cause of rejected or remade jobs and communicate recurring issues to the Lab Manager so they can be corrected upstream.
• Maintain accurate production and quality records within our lab management system.

Equipment, Safety, and Workflow

• Perform daily calibration, cleaning, and routine preventive maintenance on edgers, tracers, blockers, lensometers, and finishing equipment.
• Escalate equipment faults promptly and assist with troubleshooting to minimize production downtime.
• Manage the job queue to meet daily output targets and same-day or next-day shipping commitments, prioritizing rush and remake orders appropriately.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area and follow all laboratory safety procedures, including the use of required eye and hand protection.

Required Qualifications

• Two or more years of hands-on experience as an optical lab technician in a finishing or full-service laboratory.
• Demonstrated proficiency with automated patternless edging systems, tracers, blockers, and manual and automated lensometers.
• Working knowledge of ophthalmic lens materials, designs, coatings, and treatments, including polycarbonate, Trivex, high-index, and progressive lenses.
• Ability to read and interpret optical prescriptions and job tickets accurately and independently.
• Familiarity with ANSI Z80.1 standards and industry quality tolerances.
• Strong manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and exceptional attention to fine detail.
• Proven ability to sustain both speed and accuracy in a high-volume production environment.
• Dependable attendance, a strong work ethic, and the ability to work effectively as part of a production team.
• High school diploma or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications

• ABO certification, state optician licensure, or comparable formal optical training.
• Experience in a laboratory producing 400 or more jobs per day.
• Experience with rimless and drill-mount assembly, hand edging, and lens tinting.
• Familiarity with lab management or order management software and basic computer proficiency.
• Experience mentoring or training junior lab staff.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

• Ability to stand and work at a bench for the majority of an eight-hour shift.
• Close visual acuity, with correction, sufficient for detailed inspection work.
• Comfort working in a laboratory environment with machinery noise, water, dust, and chemical treatments, using the personal protective equipment provided.
