Job Title: Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC)
Department: Orthopedics
Reports To: Orthopedic Physician / Practice Manager
Position Summary:
The Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) functions as a clinical support professional to the orthopedic physician, providing patient care, assisting with procedures, and supporting overall clinic operations. This role combines athletic training expertise with medical assistant responsibilities to deliver high-quality, efficient patient care in an orthopedic setting.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical Support & Patient Care:
Room patients, obtain and document vital signs, medical histories, and chief complaints
Perform initial orthopedic evaluations and assist in developing treatment plans under physician direction
Apply and remove casts, splints, braces, and durable medical equipment (DME)
Assist with in-office procedures, including injections, aspirations, and minor surgical procedures
Provide patient education on diagnoses, treatment plans, post-operative care, and rehabilitation protocols
Assist with wound care, suture/staple removal, and dressing changes
Facilitate patient flow to ensure timely and efficient clinic operations
Athletic Training Duties:
Conduct musculoskeletal assessments and functional evaluations
Develop and implement rehabilitation and injury prevention programs as directed
Guide patients through therapeutic exercises and recovery protocols
Support return-to-activity and return-to-sport planning
Administrative & Operational Duties:
Accurately document patient encounters in the electronic medical record (EMR) system
Coordinate imaging, referrals, and follow-up appointments
Assist with prior authorizations, DME coordination, and patient forms as needed
Maintain exam rooms, stock supplies, and ensure cleanliness and compliance with clinical standards
Adhere to HIPAA regulations and maintain patient confidentiality
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Athletic Training
Current certification as an Athletic Trainer (ATC) through the Board of Certification (BOC)
State licensure (as required)
Current BLS/CPR certification
Previous experience in an orthopedic or sports medicine setting preferred
Skills & Competencies:
Strong knowledge of orthopedic conditions, treatments, and rehabilitation techniques
Excellent patient care and communication skills
Ability to multitask in a fast-paced clinical environment
Proficiency with EMR systems and basic clinical documentation
Team-oriented with strong organizational skills
