Position: School Social Worker
Supervisor: Director of Special Education
General Job Description: Special Education: Work with and on behalf of students receiving or suspected of needing special education programs and services. Conduct social developmental studies by means of classroom observations and screening in order to determine if a student meets criteria for additional social-emotional supports. Provide interventions that are student centered to improve personal and social well-being, increase school attendance and improve academic grades.
NM MLSS: Work with school teams to design social or behavioral contracts or guided small group social work interventions in support of the district’s NM Multi-Layered System of Supports (MLSS) program.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate appropriate skills in working with parents and families.
- Demonstrate a broad base of knowledge and training in the area of social work to enable him/her to effectively perform job responsibilities.
- Demonstrate effective organizational skills.
- Demonstrate the appropriate effective behavior in performing job tasks.
- Follow policies and administrative rules and regulations as specified in the Board Policy Manual.
- Assist in the collection of evaluation data (i.e. observation, interview, informal assessment) to assist the multi-disciplinary team in identifying individual needs and appropriate services.
- Work effectively with Special Education Staff, Teachers and Principals.
- Provide assistance with individualized program materials.
- Serve as a member of the Student Assistance Team and student staffing when requested.
- Participate in in-service training programs.
- Complete required assessments and reports in a timely manner as requested.
- Attend and participate appropriately in Individual Education Plan (IEP) meetings as needed.
- Collaborate with IEP team members to write IEP goals and provide quarterly progress monitoring on the IEP goals for social work.
- Gain information from agency clients and/or applicants for services to determine their service needs and/or the availability of suitable resources.
- Aid individuals or groups in identifying and making use of resources and services which are available to resolve everyday problems (i.e., employment, housing, health care, child care, financial assistance problems, etc.).
- Collect factual information and data for use in conducting social services research, including but not limited to working with the community to identify unsettled service needs.
- Serve all at risk students including but not limited to:
- Students with disabilities
- Migrant
- McKinney Vento
- English learners
- Chronic absentee
- Neglected and delinquent
Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
- Familiar with special education rules and guidelines.
- Maintain contact with community agencies that provide life essential services not available through the school district. Referrals will be provided to clients and their families to these agencies when necessary.
- Serve as an advocate for the students and families included in special education programs and school-wide MLSS support programs district wide.
- Be familiar with social work laws and professional code of ethics.
- Perform any other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor and/or the Superintendent.

Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree, conferred in Social Work from a regionally accredited college or university, and
- Valid Social Work License, issued by the NM Social Work Examiners Board, and
- Application for initial licensure or current Level 1 license for NMPED School Social Worker, or
- Application for renewal or current Level 2 license for NMPED School Social Worker.
Physical Requirements:
Sitting, standing, lifting, and carrying (up to 25 pounds), climbing stairs, reaching with hands and arms, mobility of fingers/hands to finger, handle or feel, close vision, distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus, squatting, kneeling, speaking, listening, and moving light furniture may be required. Reasonable ADA accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions if mutually agreed on and if those accommodations do not create an undue hardship upon the district.
Mental Demands:
- Maintain emotional control under stress, work with frequent interruptions.
- Occasional and prolonged and irregular working hours.
- Some districtwide and statewide travel.
Equipment/Material Handled:
Must know how to properly operate, or be willing to learn to operate, all multimedia equipment including current technology.
Work Environment:
Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality. Job responsibilities require both inside and outside assignments. Interruptions of work are routine. Flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignments without direct supervision. After hours work may be required. May make site or home visits when needed and appropriate. Must be able to work under stressful conditions.
