TITLE: Special Education Classroom Teacher - Elementary SUMMARY: Reporting to the Building Principal and/or Director of Student Services and Special Education, the Special Education Classroom Teacher will provide support to the instructional process with specific responsibility for supervising students within the classroom and other assigned areas; developing lesson plans and delivering group and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines; collaborating with other teachers, other professional staff, and administrators in addressing instructional and/or classroom issues; and responding to a wide range of inquiries from students’ parents or guardians regarding instructional program and student progress. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Provides direct special education instruction and services as indicated on students’ Individual Education Program. Plans and teaches daily lessons and activities to enhance student progress. Establishes and maintains a safe, positive and structured classroom environment which is supportive and conducive to student learning. Maintains, provides, and evaluates accurate student data; documents progress reports as required within established timelines. Provides positive ongoing communication with parents. Participates in IEP and team meetings and the written development of IEP’s. Conducts formal educational assessment (WIAT, KeyMath, TOWL, etc.). Prepares and presents all educational evaluations for initial and re-evaluation meetings. Makes recommendations regarding instructional adaptations, educational assessment and curriculum to address students’ needs. Co-plans and co-teaches with general educators in core classes in order to provide specialized instruction within the general education classroom, as appropriate. Actively involved in professional development (i.e. SEI endorsement, courses, workshops, and in-service training) in order to be current in new methods and approaches in special education as well as to expand knowledge of the general education curriculum for students receiving services. Participates in transition planning Pre-K to elementary and elementary to middle school. Attends all department and faculty meetings. Provides test accommodations to students. Performs other duties and responsibilities consistent with this role/position as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Experience Bachelor’s Degree in related field from an accredited college/university. Licensed with the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in Severe Disabilities. Demonstrated ability to arrange and direct Team meetings pertaining to developing the Individual Education Programs (IEP) in accordance with the regulations. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of efficiently preparing comprehensive reports which contain appropriate educational goals; interpreting Federal and State Special Education laws/regulations to parents, staff and agencies. Experience/training in Wilson preferred. Skill-based competencies include Skilled in interpreting assessments and determining educational interventions; applying assessment instruments; operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; and preparing and maintaining accurate records. Ability to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; use job-related equipment; flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing defined but different processes; operate equipment using standardized methods; work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans; maintaining constructive relationships; adapting to changing work priorities; maintaining confidentiality; exhibiting tact and patience; and working flexible hours. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to remain in a stationary position for extended periods; position oneself to demonstrate technique; move up to 25 lbs. Accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities to perform the functions. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is generally performed indoors in a school classroom environment. Salary : $54,000 - $102,000
