Outreach Phlebotomist
General Summary
· Under the general supervision of the laboratory director, the outreach phlebotomist assumes responsibility for performing venipuncture, specimen processing, and related procedures at our off-site facilities.
Essential Job Functions
· Independently performs venipuncture and collects specimens from pediatric and adult patients according to established protocol.
· Greets patients in a courteous manner by introducing self and asking the patient to give their name.
· Obtains specimens according to priority and ensures completion of specimen collection functions according to protocol.
· Ensures proper patient identification and proper labelling of specimens suitable for testing.
· Resolves identification and requisition problems and clarifies requests.
· Travel to collect samples at other outreach sites including urgent care, nursing home or rehab centers.
· Properly process all specimens for transport to Core Laboratory.
· Washes hands before and after each patient contact.
· Draws the blood properly, and rarely misses a vein (asks for help after two (2) tries) on any patient.
· Disposes of used needles after use in suitable containers, and does not recap needles.
· Uses time between tests to departmental advantage by filling in with office work, assisting technical staff, performing general duties such as putting away supplies, and performing other duties as necessary, submitting laboratory charges, and working with other departments.
· Seeks information or asks for assistance from appropriate personnel regarding patients who present difficulties.
· Complies with hospital and departmental policies, procedures, regulations and standards as related to job.
· Demonstrates hospital’s stated mission and values of teamwork, respect and communication with co-workers, patients, families and visitors.
· Meets department customer service standards and strives to enhance the level of customer service provided.
· Performs CLIA waived testing as needed.
· IF required, obtains an ABN (Advanced Beneficiary Notice) for patient, and provides a financial explanation regarding the form to the patient and sends for to HIM.
· Responsible to maintain the sample integrity from the point of obtaining the sample, through the transportation and receipt in the laboratory.
Qualifications
· Education
· Required: High school graduate with completion of phlebotomy certification program
· Work Experience
· Preferred: A minimum of one (1) year of current phlebotomy and/or Medical Lab Assistant (MLA) experience. One to two years of work experience in a customer service environment, preferably in hospital or physician office with patient interaction.
· Licensure/Certifications/Registrations
· Preferred: Certification through national credentialing association such as American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians.
Other Skills/Knowledge
· Required: Strong customer service/interpersonal skills; detail oriented; have good manual dexterity.
