Primary Function: In conjunction with the Violence Prevention Director, coordinate and conduct a variety of education and violence prevention/intervention programs, including: Pet Care Workshops, Summer Camp, TLC program, Diversion Program, and other animal assisted programs. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage large groups of children/youth in a responsible, safe, fun, and welcoming manner.
  • Assist in facilitating group discussions with children/youth and adults.
  • Lead and assist with presentations on a variety of topics, such as pet care, animal behavior, overpopulation, careers with animals, and other topics.
  • Assist with all animal assisted education programs.
  • Assist with Violence Prevention Humane Education outreaches and events.
  • Lead and assist with lesson plans, arts and crafts, and outdoor activities.
  • Assist staff with maintaining safe interactions between children/youth, adults and all program animals.
  • Assist with animal handing during programing.
  • Prepare program supplies.
  • Assist with any other necessary duties.

  • Able to manage time and activities well, and to plan ahead.
  • Able to communicate well with all staff and to work collaboratively in a team setting.
  • Able to communicate with the public in a clear and respectful manner.
  • Comfortable working with a variety of ages and backgrounds.
  • Comfortable working with dogs and cats of various breeds and sizes.
  • Comfortable speaking in front of large groups.
  • Motivated, well-organized, and outgoing.
  • Demonstrates maturity and good judgment.
  • Able to commit to working weekends and evenings.
  • Able to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Able to follow agency rules and standards responsibly.
  • Must be able to pass background checks, including Department of Justice background.

Other Essential Qualifications:

Physical Demands – While performing this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers; handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk loudly and clearly; and hear. Requires the mobility to stand, walk, sit, kneel, crouch and crawl. Perform work which includes working with dogs, lifting, carrying and/or pushing of 50 lbs. or more.

Working Conditions – Dealing with a shelter environment in which the noise level is generally moderate, but on occasion will be high. Will be working with adults and children/youth ages 6-18, in indoor and outdoor settings. In the shelter, there is possible exposure to parasites and infectious diseases.

License Required – Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver’s License will be required prior to employment. A valid license must be maintained in the course of employment. Insurable to drive company vehicle.

Experience and Training:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Experience working with children and youth required.
  • Animal knowledge and dog handling experience preferred.
