POSITION SUMMARY Performs responsible protective service work in the enforcement of ordinances regulating the keeping of animals within the County; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Senior Animal Control Officer.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Receives, processes, and concludes animal control calls.
  • Patrols and enforces State and County animal control laws.
  • Prepares and files animal control records; prepares periodic reports.
  • Must have general knowledge of the legal system, state laws, ordinances, and court rules and regulations governing the control of dogs and the protection of livestock and fowl.
  • Utilizes general knowledge of the geography of the County; general knowledge of the control and handling of dogs and other animals.
  • Operates a two-way radio.
  • Recognize rabies symptoms and have some knowledge of the methods and procedures to be followed.
  • Conducts routine patrol of County, ability to deal tactfully and professionally with the general public.
  • Responds to calls and investigates complaints.
  • Takes into custody and impounds stray and mistreated animals and animals held for evidence.
  • Enforces State and County laws pertaining to animals.
  • Verifies pets are current on inoculation; Issues appropriate citations; Sets live animal traps.
  • Cleans truck and reports necessary maintenance work.
  • Appears in court testifying for cases involving violations of animal-related ordinances.
  • Works a rotational “On Call” responding to emergency calls after hours and on weekends.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Behavior and handling of common domestic animals. Methods and equipment used in the care and control of animals. State and local laws and ordinances pertaining to the proper care and control of animals. Safety practices related to the work. Basic species and breed identification of a variety of domestic animals. Basic symptoms and behavior associated with rabies and other common diseases of animals. Health and hygiene of animals.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment which includes a vehicle, two-way radio, computer, firearm, telephone system, copier, etc. Must be able to walk, run, stoop, bend, climb, and reach as necessary in the pursuit of animals. Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of 50 to 100 pounds. The individual is required to have the ability to read a variety of informational documents, and forms and apply the methods and procedures. Requires the ability to write, talk, and/or hear; to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, and to follow oral and written instructions. This work requires the ability to work a scheduled on-call rotation or as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma.
  • Must be 21 years old, with some experience in working with animals, law enforcement, and dealing with the general public.
  • Must be able to carry firearms.
  • Must maintain proficiency with firearms.
  • Must qualify annually with firearms.

LICENSE / CERTIFICATION and OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • All regular full-time and part-time employees of Spartanburg County are required by state law to participate in the South Carolina Retirement System.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license issued in the state of South Carolina.
  • Required or ability to obtain Animal Control Officer I within one year of hire date and Animal Control Officer II Certification with two years of hire date.
  • Required ability to obtain State of SC Animal Tranquilization and Euthanasia Certification.

Pay: $41,032.00 per year
