What are the responsibilities and job description for the Tree Service Groundsman position at Spartan Tree and Landscape?
Job Summary
Join our dynamic team as a Tree Service Groundsman, where you will play a vital role in supporting safe, efficient tree care and land clearing operations from the ground. Working alongside climbers and equipment operators, you will handle brush, feed chippers, operate loaders, manage debris, and assist with rigging — keeping the job site organized, productive, and safe. Your experience and attention to detail will directly contribute to the quality and safety of every project. This paid position is built for someone who already knows the pace of tree work and is ready to step into a larger role with more responsibility, including heavy equipment operation and potential CDL advancement.
Responsibilities
- Drag, stack, and feed brush and limbs into the chipper efficiently and safely throughout the workday.
- Operate skid steers, compact loaders, and other ground equipment to move material, clear debris, and support job site logistics.
- Assist climbers and bucket operators with rigging by setting up and managing tag lines, pull lines, and lowering systems from the ground.
- Operate and maintain chainsaws, chippers, stump grinders, leaf blowers, and hand tools.
- Keep the job site clean and organized by clearing debris, raking, and loading trucks for haul-away.
- Communicate clearly with climbers and equipment operators using hand signals and verbal cues to coordinate safe work flow.
- Follow all safety protocols related to tree care operations, including maintaining safe distances from falling limbs, chipper operations, overhead hazards, and heavy equipment movement.
- Assist with traffic control and property protection measures as needed on each job site.
Qualifications
- Minimum 1 year of experience in tree care, land clearing, or a closely related field. 3 years preferred.
- Hands-on experience operating loaders, skid steers, or similar heavy equipment.
- CDL Class B license preferred. Candidates actively working toward their CDL or willing to obtain one will be strongly considered.
- Proven ability to operate chainsaws, chippers, and other ground-level equipment safely and efficiently.
- Working knowledge of rigging concepts for ground-based support of aerial operations.
- Physical stamina to perform demanding manual labor outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and ability to follow safety procedures rigorously around heavy equipment and active drop zones.
This role is ideal for experienced groundsmen ready to take the next step — whether that means running heavier equipment, earning a CDL, or growing into a crew lead position. If you know the rhythm of tree work and want to build a real career in the industry, we want to hear from you.
