We are seeking an experienced Nonprofit Tax Analyst with strong expertise in IRS Form 990 series filings and tax-exempt organization compliance.
This role is ideal for:
- A CPA or EA with nonprofit tax experience
- A senior tax associate with deep Form 990 exposure
- A former IRS professional (especially from the Exempt Organizations division)
- A nonprofit tax specialist looking to move into a product-focused environment
- As a key subject matter expert for Tax990, you will work cross-functionally with product, engineering, and customer success teams to ensure our software reflects current IRS regulations, supports accurate filings, and delivers exceptional value to nonprofit organizations.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
Tax Compliance & Advisory
- Serve as internal subject matter expert on Form 990, 990-EZ, 990-PF, 990-N, and related schedules (A–R)
- Interpret IRS instructions, revenue rulings, and regulatory updates affecting exempt organizations
- Provide guidance on IRC Section 501(c) compliance requirements
- Advise on public support tests, filing thresholds, and Unrelated Business Income Tax (Form 990-T)
- Monitor IRS rule changes and ensure timely implementation within the platform
- Serve as escalation point for complex customer tax questions
Product & Technical Collaboration
- Partner with engineering and product teams to translate tax regulations into system logic
- Review and validate form calculations, worksheets, diagnostics, and schedules
- Test annual form updates and new features before release
- Ensure platform compliance with IRS Modernized e-File (MeF) requirements and rejection codes
- Document tax rules, edge cases, and technical requirements for implementation
- Identify user experience improvements grounded in tax compliance standards
Customer Success & Education
- Assist CPAs, nonprofit treasurers, and tax professionals with advanced filing questions
- Create educational resources (guides, FAQs, webinars, training materials)
- Train customer support teams on tax law updates and filing requirements
- Conduct quality assurance reviews of complex filings when needed
Quality Assurance & Risk Mitigation
- Review software-generated returns for regulatory accuracy
- Validate automated calculations and compliance safeguards
- Identify, document, and escalate compliance risks or software issues
- Support annual form release cycles and regulatory transitions
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Credentials
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- CPA or EA strongly preferred (or working toward certification)
Experience
- 3 years of hands-on experience preparing or reviewing Form 990 series returns
- Demonstrated expertise in nonprofit tax compliance
- Strong knowledge of exempt organization rules under IRC Section 501(c)
- Experience in public accounting, nonprofit finance, IRS, or tax software environment
Technical & Knowledge Requirements
Strong working knowledge of:
- Form 990 and Schedules A–R
- Form 990-EZ requirements and thresholds
- Form 990-PF (private foundations)
- Public support calculations
- Form 990-T (Unrelated Business Income Tax)
- IRS e-file specifications and rejection handling
- Tax preparation software and e-filing systems
- Excel for validation and analysis
- Experience with JIRA, Confluence, or similar tools is a plus.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 5 years of nonprofit tax experience
- Former IRS Exempt Organizations experience
- Experience in tax software development or testing
- Knowledge of state nonprofit filing requirements
- Experience mentoring or training other tax professionals
- Background in both public accounting and nonprofit environments
