POSITION: Residence Advisor (part-time)

Residential Advisor (part-time) at Southwestern Academy involves direct interaction with students to foster an atmosphere of inclusion, adult-supervised care, and holistic well-being. Residential Advisors work with other employees to promote and enhance Southwestern Academy programs. They ensure a safe environment conducive to academic, social, and physical growth. Residential Advisors are accessible and approachable throughout their shift, regularly walking through campus and its open buildings to ensure campus safety, except when assigned off campus. Residential Advisors if they become Dorm Parents live in apartments adjacent to the dormitories and they must be conscious of their behavior, attitudes, and serve as a positive role model for the students with whom they interact.
Southwestern Academy is located in the safe and beautiful community of San Marino, the academy has for more than 100 years provided guidance and a strong academic foundation for young people entering colleges and universities throughout the United States and the world. As a co-ed boarding and day school for over 100 students, we welcome students in grades 6 to 12 from all over the world.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Student Engagement and Supervision.
- Monitor the dormitory and campus during duty.
- Conduct meal check-ins and wellness checks to account for students.
- Support and teach school-wide cleanliness efforts by supervising: (a) dorm chores (b) cleaning common spaces, and (c) clean room checks.
- Guide students in global citizenship, ethics, empathy, and personal responsibility.
- Emphasize the importance of respectful communication within the community.
- Foster a culture of mutual resolution regarding conflicts and differences.
- Educate and uphold school policies and procedures.
- Support student transportation efforts.
- Organize activities that foster belonging and inclusivity.
- Conduct and review roommate and community agreements.
- Facilitate dorm meetings.
- Provide guidance on responsible technology use and encourage a healthy balance of screen time and in person social interaction.
- Support the campus community by attending and participating in events and programs offered and assisting with school traditions.
- Model responsible electronic use. Refrain from using phones or electronic devices for non-work-related purposes. This helps ensure our focus remains dedicated to the tasks and responsibilities at hand.
- Be available and accessible, outside of your apartment, throughout the entirety of the shift. Provide visible supervision at various locations throughout the campus.
- Breaks are taken inside or outside apartments. Breaks must be communicated to the AOD.
